Staten Island, N.Y. (4/3/12) – The #6/7 Kean University baseball team used two strong innings to breeze by the College of Staten Island by the final of 15-3, Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action.
Senior Dylan Laguna led the way for the Cougars (16-6) as he was 3-for-4 with five RBI and a triple. Sophomore Shane Alvarez was 2-for-5 with four RBI and a triple of his own.
The Cougars and Dolphins (11-11) traded three runs in their first at-bats. Laguna provided the big punch in the first inning with a bases clearing triple after Kean loaded the bases on three walks scattered around two outs. CSI used two hits and a Kean miscue to tie the game up at three-all after the first frame.
It would remain that way until the top of the fifth as Kean plated six runs to take the lead for good. Junior Nick Ramagli started the scoring with an RBI double, plating senior Vinny Galya who reached on a leadoff walk. Alvarez followed with an RBI single of his own and senior Eddie Jennings recorded an RBI with a bases loaded walk. It was Laguna again who provided a two-RBI single up the middle and sophomore Nick Zucchero rounded out the scoring with a sacrifice fly to give Kean a 9-3 lead.
The Cougars were not done and plated six more in their half of the seventh as they batted around in the inning. Alvarez highlighted the inning with a bases clearing triple.
Rookie Dan Hansen (2-0) picked up the win in relief as he tossed five shutout innings allowing three hits and three walks with three four strikeouts. The bullpen combined for three scoreless innings with just two singles and four strikeouts the rest of the way.
Sophomore Joe O'Connor was 2-for-5 while Zucchero finished the day with two RBI.
Kean returns to NJAC action when they host Rutgers-Camden on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
