UWSP baseball belts 27 hits in home-opening sweep of UW-La Crosse

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team stayed hot at the plate and used two complete game performances from its starting pitchers to record two run-shortened victories over the Eagles of UW-La Crosse on Thursday afternoon. The Pointers posted an 11-1 victory in the opener and a 10-0 shutout in game two for the sweep.

The Pointers took the early lead in the second inning, plating two runs and tacked on another in the third to take the 3-0 lead after three.

The visiting Eagles got a run back in the top of the fourth, but the Pointers answered in the fifth with an opposite-field home run by Bryan Clark (Oshkosh, WI/North), his second of the season.

In the sixth, the Pointers plated seven runs to pull away and a scoreless seventh inning by La Crosse gave the Pointers the 10-run seven inning victory.

Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) collected three hits while Justin Jirschele (Clintonville, WI/Clintonville), Ryan Schilter (West Bend, WI/West) and Clark each drove in a pair of runs each to power the Pointers' offense.

Max Frederic threw a complete game, five-hitter to earn the victory, his third of the season. Frederic struck out three and walked one.

UWL's Tim Verthein suffered the loss, allowing 12 hits and nine runs, all earned in 5.1 innings of work.

In game two, the Pointers plated three runs in the second and five in the third to jump in front early and pushed the final two runs across the plate in the sixth to secure the 10-run victory.

Gerber was 2-for-3 at the plate, scored three runs and drove in another while Clark added two hits and Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas) drove in a team-high three runs. Riley Spetz (Sevastopol, WI/Sevastopol) and Casey Barnes (Mequon, WI/Homestead) also tallied two RBIs each.

Cam Seidl (Appleton, WI/Fox Valley Lutheran) secured the five-hit shutout victory, his first of the season, striking out three and walking two.

UW-Stevens Point (12-4, 5-1 WIAC) and UW-La Crosse (12-8, 4-2 WIAC) return to action on Friday, April 6 for the final two games of the season series. First pitch on Friday is set for 12 p.m.
