OSWEGO, N.Y. - Junior Jon Stevens (Chittenango, N.Y.) went the distance on the mound for the Oswego State baseball team in a 5-1 win over Brockport (13-9, 2-4 SUNYAC) Friday afternoon at Laker Baseball Field. Stevens kept the Golden Eagle hitters off balance all day as he struck out eight batters in the lineup en route to a nine-strikeout, no-walk performance to help the Lakers move to 9-13 overall and 2-3 in the SUNYAC.

It was a scoreless game heading into the top of the fifth inning until Brockport's No. 6, 7, and 8 hitters put together three straight singles to load the bases with no outs. Stevens induced the next batter into a ground ball to Tyler Baker (So., Hannibal, N.Y.), who touched second before throwing to first for the double play, while Pete Wilson scored. Oswego State got out of the inning with another ground ball, as the Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead.

The Lakers answered back in their next at-bat when Baker and Mike Stark (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) got on base courtesy of a single and a Brockport miscue. Brian Hamilton (Fr., Liverpool, N.Y.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position followed by John Rauseo (Fr., Mattituck, N.Y.). With two outs, designated hitter Matt Miller (Jr., Montoursville, Pa.) delivered a two-out single through the left side of the infield to plate two runs, putting Oswego State ahead 2-1.

In the seventh inning, the Lakers put together a three-run inning to distance themselves from the Golden Eagles. Stark started off the inning with a bunt single laid down the right field line. Two batters later, another Brockport error led to runners on first and third with one out. Scott Buniak (So., Clifton Park, N.Y.) laid down a bunt that got past the pitcher to the charging second baseman, who was unable to make a play at any base, scoring Stark from third. The hit chased starter Aaron Tilley from the game, as James Williamson came on in relief.

Williamson recorded a strikeout for the second out, but plunked Alex Jurczynski (Jr., Schenectady, N.Y.) to load the bases. It was David Mazzullo's (Sr., Rochester, N.Y.) turn to come up with the key hit, as he hit a two-run single into left field to make the score 5-1.

Brockport had runners get on base in the eighth and ninth innings, but none of them reached second base as Stevens finished his second complete game of the season to improve to 4-1.

Stark went 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored, while Mazzullo went 3-for-4 on the day to go along with his two RBI.

Kyle Tracy was the only Golden Eagle to record two hits. Tilley finished with a stat line of 6.1 innings pitched, eight hits, two walks, two strikeouts, and five unearned runs in the loss. Williamson worked 1.2 innings, allowing only one hit, while striking out three and walking one.

Both squads return to the diamond on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
