UW-L Earns Walk-Off Victories over UW-Oshkosh

La Crosse, Wis. - For the second consecutive day, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a pair of walk-off victories over UW-Oshkosh Sunday afternoon at North Campus Field.  After winning a pair of 4-3 contests Saturday, including the second in 10 innings, the Eagles earned a 4-3 victory in Sunday's opener before coming back to win the nightcap, 9-8 in 12 innings.  UW-L improves to 18-8 overall and 10-2 in the WIAC while UW-Oshkosh falls to 9-16 overall and 5-9 in the conference.  With the win in the opener, UW-L head coach Chris Schwarz earned his 150th career victory.

It is UW-L's first-ever four-game regular-season series sweep of UW-Oshkosh.

In Sunday's opener, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on Cole Cefalu's two-out single to score Trevor Burmeister who had doubled with one out.  The game remained tied until the top of the ninth when the Titans scored three times.  Brock Guetzke and Michael Polcyn started the inning with singles followed by a bunt single from Kyle Van Abel.  On the bunt single, Guetzke scored on a UW-L throwing error to tie the game at 1-1 and Polcyn advanced to third.  Polcyn then gave UW-Oshkosh a 2-1 lead as he scored on a balk with Van Abel advancing to second.  Tyler Kamps followed with an RBI single to knock in Van Abel to give the Titans a 3-1 advantage. 

UW-L then tallied three runs in the bottom of the ninth to earn the win. Jordan DeBoer doubled with one for the Eagles followed by walks to Burmeister and Corey Geary to load the bases.  Cefalu tied the game with a two-run single scoring DeBoer and pinch-runner Connor Krohn.  After Brooks Braga lined out for the second out, Adam Cordova walked to re-load the bases.  Jay Fanta followed with a single to left center to score Geary with the winning run.

Zach Lauersdorf (4-0) earned the win, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out three.  Kevin Johnson started for the Eagles, going 6.1 innings, allowing six hits and three walks with two strikeouts. 

Cefalu finished 4-for-5 wtih three RBI for UW-L while Fanta was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Matt Wells (2-2) suffered the loss for UW-Oshkosh, pitching 0.1 of an inning, allowing two hits, two runs and three walks.  James Lacy started for the Titans, going 8.1 innings, allowing seven hits, two runs and two walks while striking out six.

Polcyn was 4-for-5 with a run for UW-Oshkosh while Derek Layton finished 2-for-5.

UW-L earned its fourth straight walk-off victory with Sunday's 9-8 win in 12 innings in the nightcap.

Each team scored a run in the first with Kamps having an RBI single for the Titans and Fanta hit into a double play to score the Eagles' run.  UW-Oshkosh took a 3-1 lead with two runs in the top of the third on Alex Mullendore's two-run double.  UW-L tied the contest at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth on Cefalu's two-run double scoring Brett Jacobson and Geary.

The Titans scored five runs in the top of the fifth to lead 8-3, including four unearned runs.  Mullendore had an RBI single and Polcyn a two-run single for UW-Oshkosh.  The Eagles cut the lead to 8-4 in the bottom half of the inning on Garrett Novinski's run-scoring single to knock in Fanta.

Zach Harazin had an RBI groundout in the bottom of the seventh to score Cordova to cut the deficit to 8-5.  UW-L then tied the game with three runs in the eighht.  Novinski opened the inning with a single followed by a pinch-hit single from DeBoer.  Geary reached on a fielder's choice to knock in Novinski to make it 8-6.  Cefalu singled to send to Geary to second and Braga's two-run double tied the game scoring Geary and Cefalu.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the 12th.  Braga reached on a two-out fielding error and moved to second on another UW-Oshkosh error on a failed pick off attempt.  Cordova followed with a single up the middle to score Braga with the winning tally.

Skyler Debilzen (2-0) picked up the win in the second game for UW-L, going 4.0 innings, allowing one hit while striking out three.  Tim Larson started for the Eagles, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing six hits, seven runs (three earned) and one walk with two strikeouts.  Mark Kowalke went 3.2 innings in relief, allowing four hits and one run while striking out two. 

Cefalu was 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI while Braga finished 2-for-6 with a run and two RBI.  Cordova was 2-for-54 with a run and RBI and Novinski finished 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.  Geary scored twice.

Luke Westphal (2-5) took the loss for UW-Oshkosh, going 4.2 innings, allowing six hits, four runs (three earned) and three walks and four strikeouts.  Chad Wyss started for the Titans, pitching 3.2 innings, allowing two hits, two runs and five walks with a strikeout while Michael Swift went 3.1 innings, allowing four hits, three runs (two earned) and one walk while striking out five.

Kamps was 5-for-6 with two runs and an RBI for the Titans while Mullendore finished 2-for-5 with a run and three RBI.  Van Abel scored twice.

UW-L returns to action Saturday, April 21 hosting UW-Whitewater in a doubleheader starting at noon.
