FARMINGTON, Maine -- Colby-Sawyer College pitching held the University of Maine at Farmington scoreless over a pair of North Eastern Athletic Conference baseball games as the Chargers took a twinbill from the Beavers 3-0, 2-0 this afternoon at Hippach Field.
UMF (5-20 overall, 4-11 NAC) are scheduled to host Thomas College in a divisional doubleheader Tuesday at 1 p.m., while Colby-Sawyer face New England College Wednesday at 2 p.m. in NEAC East action in Henniker, N.H.
In the first game, Colby-Sawyer's PJ Singster (Sandown, N.H.) outdueled UMF's Casey Ashey (Searsport, Maine) as the Chargers blanked the Beavers 3-0.
Singster tossed a three-hitter in the victory. The sophomore, who walked one batter, faced just two batters over the minimum.
Ashey struck out a career-high eight strikeouts in the complete game. He walked three and gave up six hits.
Colin Mello (Windham, Maine), Brett Wallingford (Sanford, Maine) and Matthew Woodbury (Fairfield, Maine) each singled in the loss.
Tyler Stotz (Amesbury, Mass.) singled and drove in a pair of runs for the Chargers. Stotz got Colby-Sawyer on the board with a sacrifice fly in the third and gave himself up again via a flyout in the fifth. Matt Muldoon (Saugus, Mass.) capped the scoring with an RBI double. Justin Martin (Lebanon, N.H.) also doubled in the win, while Sean Gavin (Keene, N.H.) smacked a triple.
In the second game, Jordie Scheiner (Redding, Conn.) went 6.1 innings in the win and Greg Doucette (Ipswich, Mass.) closed the door as Colby-Sawyer closed out the sweep with a 2-0 win.
Scheiner allowed seven hits and struck out four for the Chargers. The biggest threat from the Beavers came in the seventh as Scheiner retired the first batter, but gave up a single to pinch-hitter Brandon Gallagher (North Yarmouth, Maine). Doucette came in and allowed singles to Chris Whitney (Lisbon, Maine) and Dale Winchenbach (Waldoboro, Maine), but got a pair of strikeouts to finish the shutout.
Ben Pearson (North Stonington, Conn.) took the loss for UMF, scattering 10 hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
Woodbury singled twice for the Beavers with Mello clubbing a double.
Martin and Stotz each finished their respective afternoons with a 3-for-3 effort apiece in game two. Gavin singled twice in the win.
