Dillman Sets Freshman Win Record in 9-2 Victory over Oglethorpe

More news about: Emory

Emory University's Connor Dillman pitched seven shutout innings during the Eagles' 9-2 win over Oglethorpe University to earn his seventh win of the season, matching the program record for victories by a freshman pitcher.

Dillman allowed just four hits and issued two walks over seven innings, while striking out nine Stormy Petrels during the game.  He improved to 7-1 on the season to match Jon Lee's 7-1 record during his freshman campaign in 1997.  Dillman lowered his ERA to 2.52 on the season, the lowest among Emory starters this season, and has now struck out 66 batters in 60.2 innings this year.

Freshman Brett Lake added his first career home run in the game, a two-run shot over the left field wall in the fourth inning that extended Emory's lead to 7-0 at the time.  Lake finished the game two-for-five, and is now batting .348 this season.

Sophomore Ryan Toscano added a three-for-four performance with two RBIs, while junior Daniel Iturrey added a pair of hits of his own, raising his batting average to .337.

After Dillman struck out the side in the top of the first, the Eagles scored three in the bottom of the inning, including two on RBI singles from Iturrey and senior Kevin O'Connor.  Emory took a 4-0 lead on Mark Lindemann's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second.

The Eagles scored three more in the fourth on an RBI single from Toscano and the Lake home run.  The scored remained 7-0 until the Stormy Petrels scored two runs in the top of the eighth, but Toscano singled in another run in the bottom of the inning, and O'Connor scored on a wild pitch to bring Emory's lead back to seven.

Catcher Jared Welch, who singled in the fourth inning to extend his hitting streak to ten games, also threw out two runners during the game, pulling to within one caught stealing of the school's career and single season records.

Emory improved to 22-10 on the season with the victory.  Starter John Gibbs (1-4) took the loss for Oglethorpe, which fell to 10-25 in 2012.

The Eagles will return to action this weekend, traveling to Fayetteville, North Carolina for a key two-game series against Methodist University, starting at 1:00 PM on Saturday.
