La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team extended its winning streak to 10 games with a doubleheader sweep of 20th-ranked UW-Whitewater Sunday afternoon at North Campus Field. The Eagles won the opener, 6-5, and the nightcap, 8-6, to improve to 22-8 overall and 14-2 in the WIAC. The Warhawks, ranked 20th on D3baseball.com and 29th on the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Poll, drop to 18-11 overall and 8-6 in the conference. UW-L is receiving votes on both polls. The 10-game winning streak is longest for UW-L since 1979 when it won 11 straight.
In the opener Sunday, UW-Whitewater took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth as Marty Herum scored on a UW-L fielding error. UW-L tied the game in the bottom of the sixth as Corey Geary scored on a double play.
The Warhawks tallied three runs, two unearned, in the seventh to lead 4-1. Dylan Friend singled with one out and scored on Jared Fon's double to make it 2-1. Fon later scored on a fielding error and Andrew Bauer hit an RBI single.
The Eagles took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Trevor Burmeister started the inning with a bunt single and after a fielder's choice for the first out of the inning, Zach Harazin walked. After a foul out, Geary singled to load the bases. Cole Cefalu followed with a grand slam to left field to give UW-L its first lead of the game.
David Cladis opened the top of the eighth for UW-Whitewater with a home run to tie the game at 5-5.
In the bottom of the ninth, Harazin opened the inning with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Connor Krohn. Jordan DeBoer sacrificed Krohn to second for the first out of the inning. After a ground-out moved Krohn to third, Cefalu hit a walk-off RBI single to center field to score Krohn.
Zach Lauersdorf (5-0) earned the win in the opener, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing three hits and three runs (one earned) while striking out two. Kevin Johnson started for the Eagles, going 6.1 innings, allowing six hits, two runs (one earned) and three walks with two strikeouts.
Cefalu, Burmeister, Harazin and Geary each had two hits for UW-L. Cefalu had five RBI and a run scored while Harazin scored once and Geary twice.
Eric Schmitz (4-2) suffered the loss for UW-Whitewater, going 1.2 innings, allowing two hits and one run. Matthew Roberts started, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing four hits, one run and one walk while striking out one.
Fon and Fred Gromalak each had two hits.
In the nightcap, UW-Whitewater took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Matt Beyer scored on Fon's ground-out. UW-L came right back in the bottom of the first as Cefalu opened with a double and Brooks Braga was hit-by-pitch. Adam Cordova then delivered with a two-run double. The Eagles made it 4-1 in the bottom of the second inning as Cefalu was hit-by-pitch with two outs and scored on Braga's home run to left center.
The Warhawks cut the margin to 4-2 in the fourth on a Andrew Bauer RBI single and tied the contest in the top of the fifth on run-scoring singles from Ryan Leavitt and Dominick Cannon. The Eagles regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Brett Jacobson doubled with two outs and Geary walked followed by a two-run double from Cefalu.
Jacobson singled in the eighth inning and score on Braga's second two-run home run of the game to give UW-L an 8-4 lead. UW-Whitewater cut the lead to 8-6 in the ninth on Herum's two-run home run.
Mark Kowalke (3-0) earned the win for UW-L. He pitched 1.1 innings, allowing one hit and one walk. Skyler Debilzen picked up his second save, going 1.0 innings with a strikeout. Tim Larson started for the Eagles, going 4.2 innings, allowing 10 hits, four runs and one walk while striking out one.
Cefalu, Braga, Cordova and Jacobson each had two hits for UW-L. Cefalu finished with two runs scored and two RBI while Braga had three runs and four RBI. Cordova finished with two RBI and Jacobson scored twice.
Tom Kerndt (2-1) took the loss for UW-Whitewater. He went 5.2 innings, allowing five hits, six runs and three walks with three strikeouts.
Herum was 4-for-5 with three runs, two RBI, two doubles and a home run. Leavitt and Fred Gromalak had two hits while Fon scored twice.
UW-L returns to action Thursday, April 26 hosting St. Olaf College (Minn.) at 2:30 p.m. The teams will play two seven inning games.
