HITTER OF THE WEEK
Matt Thompson, 1B, Sr., McMurry
McMurry senior first baseman Matt Thompson (Southlake, TX / Carroll HS) went 4-for-9 with two home runs –back-to-back shots – a double and four RBIs over a three-game ASC West Division series against Mary Hardin-Baylor. Thompson was also walked once in each game, with one leading to the game-winning run in a 2-1 finale that clinched a conference tournament spot for the War Hawks. Thompson, who takes the division's top weekly hitting award for the fourth time this season, also stole a base and scored three runs. He leads the ASC with nine homers.
CO-PITCHERS OF THE WEEK
Cameron Arnett, RHP, Sr., Mary Hardin-Baylor
Mary Hardin-Baylor senior right-hander Cameron Arnett (Belton, TX / BHS) tossed a nine-inning complete-game shutout in a must-win game against ASC West Division opponent McMurry to keep the Cru's conference tournament hopes alive. Arnett scattered eight hits and struck out eight batters while issuing only two walks in the three-game series opener.
Jeff Spillane, RHP, Jr., Texas Lutheran
Texas Lutheran junior right-hander Jeff Spillane (Houston, TX / Houston Christian) tossed a three-hit shutout with nine strikeouts on the road against nationally-ranked Concordia Texas. Spillane, who takes the division's top weekly pitching award for the second time this season, walked just two batters over the seven innings. His performance set up a winner-take-all game for the ASC West Division title.
EAST DIVISION
CO-HITTERS OF THE WEEK
Mike Kerdock, INF, Sr., Mississippi College
Mississippi College senior infielder Mike Kerdock (Greenbelt, MD / NW Shoals CC) went 8-for-12 with four doubles, a triple and three RBIs to help the Choctaws take a three-game ASC East Division series against Ozarks and secure a conference tournament berth. Kerdock, who had at least one extra-base hit in each game, also scored four runs and walked once. He had just five extra-base hits on the season entering the series.
Jake Wyand, OF, Jr., Texas-Dallas
Texas-Dallas junior outfielder Jake Wyand (Dallas, TX / Jesuit HS) went 6-for-11 with a grand slam, double and seven RBIs to help the Comets take a three-game ASC East Division series against East Texas Baptist and a share of the division crown. Wyand's grand slam came with one out in the ninth inning and UTD trailing 8-5. His blast allowed the Comets to even the series at that point. He also scored four runs, walked once and stole a base.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Austin Trehern, RHP, Jr., Mississippi College
Mississippi College junior right-hander Austin Trehern (Grand Bay, AL / Faulkner State CC) picked up the ASC tournament-clinching win against East Division opponent Ozarks by closing the game out with 5 1/3 scoreless innings. Trehern. Who entered with MC trailing 9-6, scattered five hits and struck out two batters. It was his first victory of the season.
OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES:
HITTERS: Texas-Tyler SS Aaron McCain went 10-for-15 with five doubles to help the Patriots secure a share of the East Division crown. . . . Ozarks SS Mitchell Powers went 10-for-20 with a home run and five RBIs over a 3-2 week. . . . LeTourneau DH Chris Bertram went 3-for-6 with two doubles over two games. . . . Sul Ross State 1B Brian Mata went 3-for-4, just a single short of the cycle with seven RBIs in a win over Schreiner. . . . Texas Lutheran C Ryan Hill had a 5-for-6 game in the regular season, extra-inning finale against Concordia Texas. . . .Concordia Texas OF Brent Schaekel provided a walk-off hit to top TLU in the 15th inning and secure the outright West Division title. . . .Hardin-Simmons OF Andrew Rehling went 4-for-11 with two doubles over a 3-1 week. . . . Howard Payne OF Ryan Abbott went 6-for-15 with a triple and four RBIs over four games. . . . Mary Hardin-Baylor OF Braden Embry went 8-for-18, including driving in a game-winning run in extra innings against McMurry.
PITCHERS: Texas-Dallas RHP Chase Knight earned a win out of the bullpen and allowed just three hits with six strikeouts over four innings of work that spanned two appearances. . . . Texas-Tyler RHP Parker Sheets picked up a win and allowed only one run over 2 2/3 innings of work that spanned three appearances. . . . Ozarks RHP Ian Bryan combined for seven innings of work on the week, allowing just two hits and earning a victory and a save. . . . LeTourneau RHP Chris Whitehead went 5 2/3 innings, working around eight hits for a win over Centenary. . . . Concordia Texas RHP Russell Johns picked up the win in the ASC West Division-deciding game against TLU by tossing 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief with five strikeouts in the 3-2 game that went 15 innings. . . . Hardin-Simmons RHP James Simmons earned a win and a save, striking out 10 batters over 6 2/3 innings of work that spanned two appearances. . . . Howard Payne LHP Gilbert Barrera allowed only two innings in a loss to HSU. . . .McMurry RHP Caleb Gonzales surrendered only one run over 6 1/3 innings of work and won in a 2-1 game against UMHB that clinched an ASC tournament berth.
