FREDONIA, N.Y. - The Oswego State baseball team (19-20, 8-10 SUNYAC) scored the game-winning run in the top of the sixth inning for a 3-2 victory in game one and exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh to earn a 6-2 win in game two of a SUNYAC doubleheader at Fredonia (12-22, 6-12).
Despite the two wins by Oswego State, Oneonta (9-9 SUNYAC) wrapped up the final spot in the league playoffs by winning both games of its doubleheader at Brockport.
The Lakers came ready to play on Saturday, scoring two quick runs in the top of the first in game one.
John Rauseo (Fr., Mattituck, N.Y.) singled and Steve Roman (Sr., Middletown, N.Y.) doubled to open the game. After an infield pop-up, Matt Miller (Montoursville, Pa.) singled home Rauseo to put the Lakers on the board. An error on the play also allowed Roman to score for the 2-0 advantage.
Laker starter Thor Miller (Jr., Miller Place, N.Y.) hit the first batter he faced and a single later in the inning cut the Laker lead in half, but Miller settled in after that.
Oswego State missed a chance to add to its lead when it left the bases loaded in the top of the third. Fredonia, however, made the most of a one-out double and tied the game at two in the bottom of the third.
After two innings without a base runner, Laker Alex Jurczynski (Jr., Schenectady, N.Y.) drew a one-out walk in the top of the sixth. After Andrew Lazzaro (Jr., Oswego, N.Y.) singled, Brian Hamilton (Fr., Liverpool, N.Y.) hit a two-out double to bring in Jurczynski for the 3-2 lead.
Thor Miller worked a perfect sixth and seventh inning to earn his third straight SUNYAC win, pitching a complete-game with three strikeouts and two walks in seven innings.
Roman, Mazzullo and Matt Miller led the offense with two hits each.
In game two, Fredonia scored an unearned run off Dan Erne (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) in the bottom of the second.
The Lakers matched the run in the fourth inning when Mazzullo hit a lead-off home run.
The tie lasted until the top of the seventh, when Oswego State pounded out five hits and took advantage of two Blue Devil errors to score five runs in the frame.
Matt Miller and Jurczynski opened the inning with singles, setting the table for a two-RBI double by Lazzaro.
Hamilton kept the rally going with a one-out single, but the other three runs all scored with two outs. Rauseo reached on an error by the third baseman, bringing in two runs, while Ed Charles (Jr., Auburn, N.Y.) singled home Rauseo for the final run of the inning and a 6-1 lead.
Fredonia scored again in the bottom of the eighth, forcing Erne out of the game, but Mark Schaper (Sr., Warwick, N.Y.) retired the final four batters he faced to seal the victory for the Lakers.
Erne recorded the win with five strikeouts and two walks in 7.1 innings, while Schaper fanned two batters in 1.2 innings.
Rauseo, Jurczynski and Hamilton paced the offense with two hits each.
The Lakers close out their season on Monday when they host Keystone at 3 p.m. in a nine-inning game.
