UW-La Crosse Earns Sweep at UW-Superior

Superior, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep at UW-Superior Saturday afternoon at Ted Whereatt Field.  The Eagles, ranked 22nd on D3baseball.com, won the opener, 6-1, and the nightcap, 6-5.  UW-L improves to 25-9 overall and 16-2 in the WIAC while UW-Superior falls to 17-16 overall and 8-10 in the conference.

The Eagles' 25 overall wins are the most under eighth-year head coach Chris Schwarz after finishing 24-15 last season.

UW-L is two wins short of tying the school record for victories in a season.  The Eagles finished 27-15 in 2000.

The Eagles have won 13 of their last 14 games overall after Saturday's action.

In Saturday's opener, Tim Verthein (4-4) earned the complete-game victory.  He pitched 9.0 innings, allowing three hits, one run and two walks with a career-high 13 strikeouts.

The Eagles tallied five times in the top of third.  Jay Fanta walked with the bases loaded to make it 1-0 and Zach Harazin followed with a two-run single to give UW-L a 3-0 advantage.  Jordan DeBoer and Trevor Burmeister added RBI singles to finish the scoring.

UW-Superior cut the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth on Rob Veith's double scoring Joe Ahrens.

UW-L added a run in the sixth on Brooks Braga's solo home run.

Braga finished 4-for-4 for the Eagles with two runs scored and an RBI.  Harazin and DeBoer each went 2-for-5 with Harazin recording two RBI and a run scored.  DeBoer had on RBI.

Dan Genrich (4-3) took the loss for UW-Superior, going 6.0 innings, allowing eight hits, six runs and four walks while striking out two.

Three different players had a hit for the Yellowjackets.

In the nightcap, UW-Superior took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Wyatt Soderquist's RBI single.  UW-L came back to take a 2-1 lead in the top of third inning as Harazin scored on a Yellowjackets' error and Braga hit an RBI double to score Corey Geary.  UW-Superior tied the contest at 2-2 in the bottom half of the frame on Soderquist's run-scoring triple.

The Eagles tallied two runs in the fourth to take a 4-2 advantage as Burmeister and Fanta scored on an error, but the Yellowjackets took a 5-4 leadi n the bottom of the sixth on T.J. Evanson's three-run home run.

UW-L tied the game in the eighth as Cole Cefalu walked and scored on Adam Cordova's double.  The Eagles scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the ninth.  Harazin singled with one out and was replaced by pinch-runner Connor Krohn, who stole second.  He then scored on a throwing error by UW-Superior on Jake Paulson's ground ball.

Garrett Scray (5-3) earned the win for UW-L, pitching 8.0 innings, allowing eight hits, five runs and two walks with five strikeouts.  Zach Lauersdorf picked up his fourth save, going 1.0 inning with one walk and two strikeouts.

Braga finished 2-for-4 with an RBI while five players had one hit.

Mike Swanson (3-3) took the loss for UW-Superior.  He went 9.0 innings with seven hits, six runs (two earned) and two walks while striking out six.

Soderquist finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored while Veith was 2-for-5 with two runs.

UW-L and UW-Superior will play another twinbill Sunday, April 29 at noon.
