UW-L Defeats UW-Stout; Second Game Postponed

Menomonie, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a 10-6 victory over UW-Stout Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader at Nelson Field.  The second game was postponed due to rain and will be played Sunday, May 6. UW-L, ranked 19th on this week's D3baseball.com Poll, improves to 30-9 overall and 21-2 in the WIAC while UW-Stout drops to 17-22 overall and 6-17 in the conference.

UW-L set a school record for overall victories with its doubleheader sweep at UW-Stout Friday afternoon.  The Eagles have also set a school record for conference victories (21).  UW-L was 19-9 in 2002.

In Saturday's opener, UW-L tallied five runs in the top of the second to lead 5-0.  Zach Harazin gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead on an RBI single to score Jake Paulson who walked to open the inning and moved to third on Brett Jacobson's double.  Jacobson then scored on a UW-Stout error to make it 2-0.  Cole Cefalu and Brooks Braga later hit back-to-back RBI singles and Adam Cordova had an RBI double.

UW-Stout cut the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the third on Santiago Morales' RBI single.  UW-L took a 7-1 with a pair of runs in the fourth inning as Braga had an RBI double and he later scored on a Blue Devils' throwing error after stealing third.

The Blue Devils made it 7-2 in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout from AJ Yusten.  UW-Stout cut the deficit to 7-4 in the sixth on an RBI single from Brett Vavra and Yusten scored on a UW-L error.

The Eagles scored three times in the eighth with Cefalu, Matt Johnson and Jay Fanta with RBI singles.  The Blue Devils finished the scoring in the ninth on Chris Sill's solo home run and Jake Duske scored on a wild pitch.

Kevin Johnson (4-0) earned the win for UW-L, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing six hits, four runs (one earned) and two walks while striking out five.  Skyler Debilzen pitched 2.0 innings, allowing two hits and two runs with three strikeouts.

Cefalu and Braga both finished with three hits, two runs scored and two RBI while Fanta, Paulson, Jacobson and Corey Geary each had two hits.  Geary also scored twice.  Eight of nine starters had a hit for UW-L as the team finished with 17 overall.

Carter Vogt (2-4) took the loss for UW-Stout.  He went 7.0 innings, allowing 14 hits, 10 runs (seven earned) and two walks.

Sill finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI for the Blue Devils while Morales was 2-for-5 with an RBI .  Duske scored twice.

The teams are scheduled to play Sunday, May 6 at a time to be determined.
