Farmingdale, N.Y. (5/11/12) – The #9/11 Kean University baseball team put up a ten-spot in the second inning on their way to topping Farmingdale State College, 12-3, Friday evening in the regular season finale for both schools.
Kean improves to 32-10 this season as they await the bracket for the NCAA regional tournament slated to begin on Wednesday, May 16. Farmingdale falls to 29-10 as they too await the NCAA selections.
The Cougars sent 14 batters to the plate in the top of the second, tallying eight hits as they jumped out to a 10-0 lead. Sophomore Nick Zucchero got things going with a sacrifice fly followed by a bunt single from senior D.J. Breckenridge. Senior Steve Sanguiliano launched his fourth homerun of the season, a three-run blast to give Kean a 7-0 lead. The Cougars didn't stop there, as sophomore Joe O'Connor picked up his eighth triple of the season followed by a double from Zucchero as Kean batted around. Breckenridge rounded out the scoring in the inning with an RBI triple of his own.
Southpaw Ryan Zamorsky earned the win with a predetermined rotation in Kean's final regular season game. Zamorsky (9-1) allowed two runs with three strikeouts in four innings of work. Relievers Charles Thielmann, Matt Mantione and Kevin Herget combined for four innings of shutout ball. Herget also recorded four strikeouts, giving him 99 for the season.
Offensively Breckenridge was 3-for-5 with three RBI as he was a homerun shy of the cycle. Sanguiliano tallied three RBI and two hits while Zucchero added two RBI. Rookie Anthony Fischetti had two hits in two at-bats as O'Connor crossed the plate three times.
