#1 SUNY Cortland - 7, #6 Castleton State - 6
Farmingdale, N.Y. - With a six run second inning, SUNY Cortland (36-7-1) held on for a 7-6 victory over the Castleton State Spartans (33-15) in game one of the NCAA Division III Farmingdale baseball regional. Red Dragons senior pitcher Aaron Schuldt (Liverpool, N.Y.) pitched 7.1 innings for the win, hurling 131 pitches while allowing just three earned runs. Schuldt improves his record this year to 8-1.
Castleton got on the board first on an RBI single to right by sophomore Joe Borowski (Schenectady, N.Y.). Cortland responded with six runs in the second on eight hits, to seemingly run away with the game and take a 6-1 lead. But the Spartans were not done yet as they held the Red Dragons to just one run the rest of the way.
Sophomore catcher Macyn Clifford (Brookline, N.H.) scored an unearned run in the fourth, before senior David Brandt (Contoocook, N.H.) singled up the middle to bring home the second run of the inning. The Spartans added one more in the seventh and rallied for two more in the top of the eighth to make it a 7-6 game.
Cortland's senior pitcher Tom Nagy (Greenville, N.Y.) relieved senior relief pitcher Brendan Hourihan (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) in the ninth and after walking the first batter, struck out the next three to earn his third save of the year and secure the win.
For the Red Dragons, senior second baseman Matt June (Colonie, N.Y.) had two RBI's, while junior outfielder Andrew Pezzuto (Hastings, N.Y.), junior shortstop John Adornetto (Commack, N.Y.) and sophomore catcher Tim Panetta (Mount Kisco, N.Y.).
Cortland will now play in the 3:30 p.m. game tomorrow against the loser of tonight's 7:00 p.m. game featuring #3 Ithaca/#4 Misericordia. Castleton will face the loser of #2 Farmingdale State/#5 Skidmore tomorrow at Noon.
