NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - No. 5/6 Salisbury University will play for the 2012 Newport News Regional title after downing No. 19/20 Shenandoah University 2-1 in 14 innings Friday afternoon.
Shenandoah (31-12) now moves into an elimination game against regional top-seed Christopher Newport University.
The Hornets and Captains, who have split 16 meetings in the past four years, will stage the ultimate rubber match beginning at 11 a.m. The winner of that game advances into a 2:30 winner-take-all championship contest against Salisbury.
The Sea Gulls (34-8) scored the winning run in the top of the 14th when Johnny Schiotis scored from third on a Joey Jones fielder's choice to second base.
Schiotis led off the Salisbury 14th with an infield single, was sacrificed to second and advanced to third on a Bill Root single to center.
Kurt Krout led off the bottom of the frame with a single through the left side and eventually advanced to third with two outs, but Corbin Lucas flied out to right to end the contest.
Shenandoah, which took the early lead with an unearned runin the fourth, left 14 runners on base and saw the Gulls turn four double plays.
The Hornets had the bases loaded in the 13th, but could not push across the game-winner.
Kyle Scallion (1-3), who pitched 6 2/3 innings in relief of Jeff Stanek, took the loss. Scallion allowed just three hits and walked two while striking out four.
Jeff Hoffman threw the first 12 1/3 for Salisbury. He scattered 12 hits, walked two and struck out one.
Jake Pendergraft had a game-high three hits for Shenandoah.
