Middletown, Conn. - The visiting Trinity College Bantams tuned up for the upcoming New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Baseball Tournament, which the Bantams will host on May 11-13, by closing out its regular season with a sweep of the Wesleyan University Cardinals, 7/12-1/2, this afternoon.  Trinity ends the regular season with a 29-9 mark while Wesleyan concludes the year at 18-19. 

In the first game, Trinity took a 2-0 lead in the first inning by scoring a pair of unearned runs.  Junior OF Alex Almeida (Bridgeport, Conn.) singled up the middle, and classmate Michael Rueger (Teaneck, N.J.) placed a perfect sacrifice bunt down the third-base line.  An errant throw allowed Almeida to reach third base and Rueger to settled into second.  Senior tri-captain Kevin Mortimer (Spencer, Mass.) followed with a sacrifice fly to center.  With two outs, junior Stephen Rogers (Watertown, Mass.) lofted a single into center for an RBI.  The Bantams made it 4-0 in the 3rd inning when Mortimer smacked his team-leading sixth homer of the season over the right-field fence.  Senior tri-captain James Ramsey (Belmont, Mass.) followed with a liner to left that bounced in front of him and bounced to the right of the Cardial outfielder, rolling all the way to the fence for a triple.  Rogers then got his second RBI single of the day to drive in Ramsey.

Wesleyan cut the margin to 4-1 in the bottom of the third as Joe Giaimo singled to right, driving in freshman Andrew Yin, who had singled on a bunt and moved to second on a groundout.  Trinity added another unearned run in the fifth and got two more in the seventh with one run scoring on a passed ball and another on a bases-loaded walk.  Trinity collected 13 hits in the contest, four of them by senior OF David Casanova (Bristol, Conn.), who had a 4-for-4 game hitting ninth in the batting order.  Rogers finished with three hits.  Wesleyan was led by Giaimo and Yin, both with two hits, while senior Kyle Weiss also had a pair for the Cardinals.  On the mound, Bantam senior Edward Donovan (MIlton, Mass.) tossed eight strong innings, allowing eight hits and one run to post his fourth win of the year.  Wesleyan senior Mike Barsotti went six innings, giving up two earned runs with five strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Trinity again stuck early, this time racking up five runs in the first inning behind four hits and four walks as 10 men came to the plate.  Junior Marc Crowley (Andover, Mass.) began the scoring with an RBI single with the bases loaded.  Senior C Luke Auger (Avon, Conn.) then walked to force in the second run.  A two-run single through the left side by junior Bryan Ginsberg (Westwood, Mass.) made it 4-0, and Casanova capped the frame with his fifth single of the day to make it 5-0.  Wesleyan got a run in the third on a pair of walks and a comebacker to Bantam starting pitcher sophomore Peter Burrows (Floral Park, N.Y.), who wheeled to throw to second base, realized no one was there, and lost control of the ball as his throw went into left field allowing Weiss to score.  Burrows went six solid frames, yielding four hits and one run while upping his record to 3-2.

Trinity got an RBI double from Mortimer to bring in the sixth Bantam run in the sixth.  Junior Joe Papa (Stoneham, Mass.) then hit a deep double to center field to bring in a pair of runs, making it an 8-1 contest before the inning was over.  Another RBI double for the Bantams came off the bat of Ramsey in the eighth, making it 9-2.  Before that, the Cardinals manufactured their second run in the seventh when senior Noah Feingold was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a wild pitch.  The Bantams made it a 12-2 final by chasing in three more runs in the ninth as Almeida and freshman Connor Sullivan (Fairfield, Conn.) picked up RBI and another run scored on a wild pitch.  Trinity rolled up 16 hits in the contest with five players collecting two each.  Casanova was one of them as he enjoyed a 6-for-7 effort at the plate on the day and made just one out in nine plate appearances as he also walked twice.  Wesleyan got two of its six hits in the second game from senior Alex Meadow.
