NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Junior righty Bryan Bierlein (1-0) pitched a gem and junior outfielder Justin Weaver stroked his second game-winning double in as many days to lead CNU to a 2-1 win over Ferrum on Sunday. The win gives the Captains (4-0, 3-0) a three-game sweep over the Panthers (1-4, 0-3) and runs their season-opening win streak to four games.

Bierlein was locked in from the start, allowing just one hit through the first five innings of work. He struck out a career-high ten in the game, and didn't allow a runner to reach second until the sixth inning.

The Panthers would strike first, though, getting an RBI single from Eddie McGrath in the top of the 6th. Justin Cox singled through the left side to move a runner into scoring position, followed by McGrath's drive into right field for the go-ahead run.

Bierlein stayed in the game through the seventh, and retired the side in order for the fifth time, including his 10th strikeout. The Captains offense finally came to his aid in the bottom half of the inning, on the back of Weaver.

Sophomore Preston Grissom led off with a base-hit bunt down the third base line, and stole second. After a groundout, senior Christopher McDougal walked to put the go-ahead run on base with one out. Ferrum called on reliever Adam Duncan, who struck out the first batter he faced. With two outs, though, Weaver drove a tailing shot down the left field line that tucked into the corner for two bases, scoring both runners and giving CNU the lead.

With a 2-1 advantage, head coach John Harvell turned to his veteran bullpen to close the door. Matt Verdillo went 1-2-3 in the eighth, with a pair of strikeouts. Then, in the ninth, CNU's all-time leader in saves, Ryan Fleischmann, came on and pitched a perfect ninth. It was his second save of the season, giving him 20 in his career, just two shy of the USA South Conference record of 22.

Weaver finished the game 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, collecting half of CNU's hits in the game. Reynolds was 2-for-3 for the Panthers. On the hill, rookie Jake Perkins led the way for Ferrum, striking out six in 6.1 innings of work, giving up just four hits.

Bierlein finished with 10 K's in 7.0 innings, allowing just four hits and not allowing a free pass in the game.

CNU will return to action this Tuesday, at 2:00 pm, as they take on Eastern Mennonite University (2-1). Live stats will be available at CNUsports.com.
