NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The eighth-ranked Christopher Newport Captains exploded for 15 runs on 15 hits Tuesday afternoon, surging past the Eastern Mennonite Royals (2-2) in a 15-6 win. Eight starters registered at least one hit and all but one scored at least one run in the game. Sophomore center fielder Preston Grissom paced the attack, going 4-for-6 with two doubles and three runs scored.

EMU took the lead early, scoring three runs in the top half of the first inning. Jonathan Estrada drove in a pair with a double down the right field line, and then came in to score on a single up the middle by Brandon Carroll.

CNU would respond in the second inning, tying things up with a two-out rally. Rookie Jacob Houston walked and stole second, followed by a walk and a single from Travis Younger and Grissom, respectively. An RBI walk from Billy Steel put CNU on the board, and a pair of Royals miscues led to two more runs.

Kyle Armstong gave Eastern Mennonite another short-lived lead in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly, scoring Justin Rodriguez. CNU tied things back up on another mishap, when Kyle Corwin scored on a wild pitch after hitting a one-out double.

The home team hit stride in the fourth when Grissom led off with a double. Bryant Lowry drove him in with a single and then a high, deep blast from Justin Weaver caught the center field wall for a two-run triple.

The Captains would go on to score in seven of their eight appearances at the plate, including another three-run inning in the seventh. Steel and Weaver each had three RBI in the game, while Lowry tacked on two more for CNU. Sophomore catcher Tommy Kane added a 2-for-5 performance at the plate, as one of three Captains with multi-hit performances.

Brett Mays (1-0) picked up his first win as a Captain, giving up just one hit in three innings of relief. Sophomores Adam Emerson and Kyle Goddard combined for three clean innings, giving up just one baserunner combined.

EMU threw eight different pitchers in the game, with Austin Oliver suffering the setback. Estrada was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI, while Adam Posey was 2-for-3 with two runs driven in.

CNU will be back in action this Thursday, Feb 14 at 2:00 pm. The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but was rescheduled for Thursday due to impending weather concerns. The Captains will take on Randolph-Macon at home with live stats available at CNUsports.com.
