NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Junior transfer Austin Chrismon (2-0) struck out 12 in six innings of work and the Captains offense scored in all but one inning as the eighth-ranked Captains (6-1, 4-0) blew past Maryville College today, 15-3, in eight innings. The Scots fall to 4-2 overall, 2-2 in the conference. The second game of the doubleheader was moved to Sunday, due to inclement weather, and will be played at 11:00 am.

In his second start of the season, Chrismon again put together a strong outing for CNU. He faced just 10 batters in the first three innings, with seven strikeouts including three straight in the third.

By that time, CNU had already tacked on a pair of runs, on a RBI groundout from Billy Steel and an RBI single by Bryant Lowry. Maryville cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth when Zack Blonder hit a run-scoring double to right center, but CNU would respond in the bottom half when Paul Keyes plated Preston Grissom with a single.

In the fifth, senior Christopher McDougal blasted his first home run of the year, taking a shot over the left field wall to lead off the inning. A bases loaded double play ball would score another run in the inning as CNU took a 5-1 lead.

CNU then put together a big six-run 6th inning to open up a big lead, 11-2. Tommy Kane had the big hit in the inning, with a bases-loaded double down the right field line to score a pair. Then, Jacob Houston singled into right field to score two more.

With the lead in hand, CNU kept applying pressure, tacking on two more runs in the seventh on another single by Houston, setting up the game-winning eighth. Steel walked, followed by a McDougal single to left. Lowry plated Steel with a single to center, and the game-winning hit came off of Curtis Pittman's bat with a single to left field to score the 15th run.

Chrismon finished with 12 K's with just four hits allowed in 6.0 innings of work. Matt Dyer (0-1) suffered the loss for Maryville, giving up four earned runs in four innings on the hill.

Offensively, six different Captains had multi-hit performances, led by McDougal and Lowry with three-hit performances. The senior was 3-for-4 with the solo homer and three runs scored, while Lowry was 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI. Rookie Jacob Houston finished with a team-high four runs driven in, going 2-for-5 at the plate. Preston Grissom scored four times and had four stolen bases in his first game out of the leadoff position, going 2-for-3 with three walks.

On Sunday, the Captains will take on the Fighting Scots in a doubleheader starting at 11:00 am. Live stats will be available at CNUsports.com
