DEMAURO FANS SEVEN IN GAME TWO AS NJCU WINS FIRST GAME OF VIRGINIA TRIP, 8-4

LEXINGTON, VA (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University sophomore right-hander KEVIN DEMAURO (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) struck out seven batters in seven innings, allowing just three hits and no earned runs and the Gothic Knights scored five times in the fourth inning to claim an 8-4 non-conference victory over host Washington & Lee University in game two of a doubleheader on February 16 at Smith Field.

NJCU (1-2), which had lost the first two games of the trip by one run each, held the Generals (3-1) to six hits for the second consecutive game and handed W&L its first loss of the season.
 
DeMauro, who went 2-4 as a rookie against tough competition in 2012, improved to 1-1 on the season, fanning seven of the 28 batters he faced while scattering three hits in seven innings, including two singles, against two walks. He struck out two of the first three batters he faced and four of the first six, while retiring seven consecutive batters to start the day.
 
Senior center fielder MICHAEL PATTERSON (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) had his third consecutive multi-hit effort to start the season, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs to increase his average to .583. He has 11 multi-hit games since joining the team last season. He had his second triple in three games.
 
NJCU collected 14 hits overall and all 10 positions players who saw action tallied at least one. Sophomore shortstop MICHAEL MARTUCCI (Bayonne, NJ/Saint Peter's Prep) was 2-for-4 with a double, run and RBI while freshman catcher ANDREW NIECH (Avenel, NJ/Colonia) was 2-for-5 and also generated a double, run and RBI.
