WEST HARRISON, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team (1-0) relied on a 15-strikeout performance from senior pitcher Chris Chismar (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), as the Hawks blanked non-conference Baruch College (0-1), 2-0, in the 2013 season opener for both teams Friday at Silver Lake Park. Chismar fanned 15 batters over six innings of work, scattering two hits and walking two.

It marks Chismar's second-largest strikeout total in a single game in his career, with his 20-strikeout performance against SUNY Oswego on April 19, 2010, serving as the program record and his career-high.

All of New Paltz's scoring came in the first inning before the pitchers bore down and held the lineups in check.

Senior outfielder Matt Carr (Westbury, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) blasted a leadoff single before a double by senior pitcher/outfielder Anthony Repetto (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) put runners on second and third. Senior infielder/outfielder Thomas Pinnola (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) plated Carr off a ground out, and a passed ball pushed across Repetto.

Baruch pounded out three hits for the game and left the bases loaded with no outs in the sixth inning. Chismar wound up striking out the next three batters and escaped the frame unscathed.

New Paltz had just two hits for the contest, and Baruch's starter Paul Perez retired 24 straight after permitting the two runs in the first. Perez threw eight frames and struck out four, earning a complete game.

Junior pitcher Chris Pyz (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) worked three innings in relief, hurling four strikeouts and holding the Bearcats hitless.

The Hawks compete at the Ty Cobb Classic hosted by Hampden-Sydney College from Saturday, Feb. 23, through Sunday, Feb. 24. New Paltz squares off with Hampden-Sydney tomorrow at 3 p.m. before facing Rutgers University-Camden on Sunday at 11 a.m.
