No. 8 Captains Fall, 2-1, Despite Masterful Pitching Performance by Austin Chrismon

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Junior Austin Chrismon (Newport News, Va.) pitched a masterpiece, striking out a Christopher Newport record 18 batters, but the eighth-ranked Captains were unable to get him the win, falling 2-1 in USA South action versus Greensboro College. Chrismon gave up just four hits, all singles, in a complete game effort, allowing just two unearned runs.

CNU falls to 8-2-1 overall, suffering its first loss in league play and falling to 6-1 in the USA South; the Pride picks up its seventh win, improving to 7-4, with a 3-4 mark against the league.

The game was rescheduled three times over the weekend, and finally picked up at 7:00 pm on Sunday evening, the first of a three-game set in Greensboro. CNU will return to the diamond on Monday for a doubleheader at Noon. With an extra-days rest, Chrismon did not disappoint.

His only blemish came in the second inning, when the Pride scored a pair of runs on a single by Matthew Parker. Chrismon got a groundout and struck out Bill Wooding to start the inning before it was extended by an error, meaning both runs were unearned.

The run-scoring hit erased the 1-0 lead that Chrismon was staked to in the top of the first after Preston Grissom scored for CNU. The sophomore came in on an RBI single by Bryant Lowry. That would be it for CNU's offense though, as three different Greensboro pitchers held the Captains to just five hits.

Chrismon did all he could, striking out the side in three different innings, and had at least one K in all eight innings. His 18 strikeouts sets a new Christopher Newport mark, as he shattered the previous mark of 15 set by Mike Cosby against Averett on April 15, 2004. Nine of his punchouts missed bats and nine batters were caught looking on the final strike. He finished the 8-inning complete game in 118 pitches with 31 batters faced.

Offensively, CNU got two hits from Grissom, including a double, and one hit each from Lowry, Jacob Houston and Paul Keyes.

John Atkins picked up the win for Greensboro, who despite only five strikeouts, matched Chrismon for seven innings with just one earned run on five hits allowed. Brian Robbett picked up his fourth save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out the side.
