HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 24, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team picked up its second win of the season with a 9-4 triumph over the City College of New York on Sunday afternoon at the Dobbelaar Field. Nine different hitters recorded a hit, while seven pitchers combined to strikeout 13 CCNY batters.

The Ducks wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as lead-off batter junior Curt Lowenstein (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) doubled down the leftfield line and then came around to score on an RBI single by fellow junior Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.). Before Allen's single, sophomore Pete Prontnicki (Edison, N.J.) walked and then pulled off a double steal with Lowenstein to move into scoring position. He then crossed the plate on a ground out by senior Michael Donovan (Frisco, Texas).

Stevens tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to build a 6-0 lead. Donovan began the inning with a single and then moved up to second on a base hit by freshman Jayson Yano (Foothill Ranch, Calif.). After another double steal from Donovan and Yano, sophomore Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.) brought one run in with a fielder's choice. Mannello then swiped second base and scored with Yano on a two-run ground rule double by classmate Gregg Nickels (Simpsonville, S.C.). Nickels would come in to score on an error by the CCNY rightfielder to cap off the inning.

CCNY attempted a comeback in the seventh inning with three runs on two hits. After the first two Beavers were retired, Jaquan Murphy reached on an infield single to start the rally. Two consecutive walks loaded the bases for CCNY and Kennedy Tavarez drove in two with a single to the gap in right-centerfield. The third run scored on a failed pick-off attempt at first with runners on the corners.

The Ducks plated one more run in the seventh after sophomore Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.J.) doubled to lead off the bottom half of the inning. Hennelly moved up to third on a wild pitch and came across to score on another errant pitch.

In the eighth, Mike Smith cranked a solo homerun to right field to pull back within three runs at 7-4 but could not do anything else at the plate. In the bottom half of the inning, Stevens put two more runs on the board on a throwing error by the CCNY pitcher and a rundown between first and second that led to the final run of the game.

Senior Tyler Courter (Glenwood, N.J.) was given the starting nod on the mound and struck out five batters in two innings with one walk. Sophomore Matt Buccheri (Little Silver, N.J.) tossed two innings and surrendered one hit with four punchouts.

Sophomore Gary Boardman (Staten Island, N.Y.) picked up the victory by throwing two innings with two strikeouts and gave up one hit. Three freshmen, Easton Obojkovits(Holmes, N.Y)Jordan Andrepont (Kingwood, Texas) and Bridger Cohen (Chester, N.J.) and sophomore Peirce Marston (Silver Spring, Md.) split the final three innings of work for the Ducks.

Stevens stole five bases in the win and recorded four doubles at the plate.

The Ducks will be back on the field for the inaugural Birthplace in Baseball Classic against Eastern Connecticut State University on March 2 at 3:30 p.m.
