Lake & Sprague Guide Emory to 8-5 Win at Maryville

More news about: Emory

Emory University sophomore Brett Lake drove in three runs, and freshman Tyler Sprague turned in his second solid start in a row to begin his collegiate career, as the Eagles defeated Maryville College 8-5 in Maryville, Tennessee on Tuesday night.

Lake finished the game three-for-three with a double, three RBIs, a run scored and two stolen bases.  He is now Emory's leading hitter with a .440 average this season.

Meanwhile, Sprague picked up his second win in as many appearances this season, scattering seven hits and a walk over seven innings, while striking out seven and surrendering four runs, three of which were earned.  Sprague has a 1.93 ERA through 14 innings pitched this year.

Emory raised its record to 5-2 on the season with the win, while the Scots dropped to 5-8 with the loss.  The Eagles' win broke up a seven-game losing streak to Maryville, dating back to the 2009 campaign.

After falling behind 2-0 after one inning, Emory gained the lead for good in the second.  Sophomore center fielder Wes Peacock led the frame off with a triple, and scored on an RBI groundout from freshman Jack Karras to cut the Scots' lead in half.  Later in the inning, after a Ben Vizvary single, a walk to Dylan Eisner and Jared Kahn single loaded the bases, Lake drove in a pair with a base hit, and Daniel Iturrey followed with a hit to score Kahn, giving Emory a 4-2 advantage.

Emory added on runs with a Jared Welch RBI single in the fifth, and a sacrifice fly from Eisner in the seventh.  Maryville scored two runs in the seventh, but Emory responded with a pair of runs on a Lake RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Peacock in the top of the eighth, bringing the Eagles' advantage to 8-4.

Pitching in relief, Matt McMahon allowed an unearned run to score for Maryville in the eighth, cutting Emory's lead to three, but he would shut the door in the ninth to secure the victory.

Peacock added a three-for-four performance at the plate, while Brandon Hannon went one-for-three with two walks and two stolen bases.  Emory base runners swiped four bases on as many tries on Tuesday, and have now stolen safely in each of their last 29 tries, and in 30 of 31 attempts this year.

Emory baseball will be back in action this weekend, opening a three-game series with Huntingdon College on the road on Friday, March 1st, at 6:00 PM ET, before returning home to face the Hawks on Saturday at 2:00 PM ET and Sunday at 1:00 PM ET.
