Four Run Ninth Leads Western New England Past Rams

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State baseball team fell, 6-2, in their home opener this afternoon against 13th ranked Western New England. The Rams dropped to 1-5 on the year, while the Golden Bears are 1-0.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Farmingdale State sophomore second baseman Tom Rydzewski (Franklin Square, N.Y.) recahed first after being hit by a pitch. Rydzewski stole second and scored on a David Zilnicki (Riverhead, N.Y.) RBI single to right field. Freshman designated hitter Dalton McCarthy (Manorville, N.Y.) tied the game at 2-2 on a one out RBI triple to right.

Western New England led off the ninth inning with back-to-back singles and then loaded the bases with one out. The Golden Bears took a 3-2 lead after Kyle McKelvey (Schenectady, N.Y.) walked and increased the advantage to 6-2 on a 3 RBI bases clearing triple by junior first baseman Steve Ambrosino (Laurel Hollow, N.Y.).

The Rams managed a two out single in the ninth but were unable score.

Zilnicki was 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI, while senior third baseman Ron Remi (Massapequa, N.Y.) added two hits. Senior starting pitcher Anthony Eilers (Bay Shore, N.Y.) earned a no decision after allowing one earned run and four hits over seven innings of work.

Senior third baseman Mike Rubino (Northford, Conn.) led the way for Western New England with two hits and two runs scored, while Ambrosino was 1-for-4 with 3 RBI. Senior pitcher Mike Lospinuso (West Islip, N.Y.) picked up the win after throwing 3.2 scoreless innings in relief.

Farmingdale State will host Keene State at 10:00 a.m. and RPI at 1:30 p.m. in the second day of the 2013 Spring Baseball Classic tomorrow.
