Guilford Splits ODAC Openers with Va. Wesleyan

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College's Corey Wallace had a two-run homer and an RBI triple during back-to-back at-bats in the Quakers' 9-8 game two win over Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday.

The victory gained a split of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) season-opening twinbill as the Marlins (3-9, 1-1 ODAC) won game one, 4-1.

Virginia Wesleyan was ahead 3-0 heading into the bottom of game two's fourth inning, before a Justin Pittman RBI single and Wallace's two-run home run to left field tied the game at three runs apiece. Guilford (6-6, 1-1 ODAC) was ahead 8-4 after the seventh inning.

The Marlins began the eighth inning with a Billy Crowe two-run triple, an Evan Polk RBI single and Brett Sutryk RBI, tying the game, 8-8. Pittman plated D.J. Phillips with his single through the right side, scoring the winning run. Tyler Tuttle earned his third win on the mound after allowing one run in two innings.

Pittman went 3-for-4 with a game-high three runs and two RBI. Wallace finished with two hits and three runs batted in. Herc Ingels and Jordan Slate also had two hits apiece.

Alex Tucci (1-1) allowed only one run over nine innings in Virginia Wesleyan's game one win. Billy Crowe tallied two RBI in each game. Kenneth Belg had three runs on the afternoon. 

The Quakers next play Averett University at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 6 in a nonconference game at McBane Field.
