SALISBURY, Md. – The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team (1-4) dropped a doubleheader at sixth-ranked Salisbury University (6-1) on Saturday by scores of 5-0 and 4-3 in a pair of seven-inning games.

The Hawks failed to put a run across against Salisbury in the opener, as Sea Gulls starter Andrew Levy tossed six scoreless innings to earn the win. Junior starting pitcher Andrew Grann (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) went 5.2 innings in his second outing of the year, allowing five runs on 11 hits, while striking out five.

Salisbury got on the board for the first time in the third inning when shortstop Ken O'Neill lined a single down the left field line, plating first baseman Quinn Griffith and left fielder Nick Gentry to give the Sea Gulls a 2-0 lead. They added their other three runs in the sixth, coming off a passed ball, a sacrifice fly and a Griffith RBI single.

Senior left fielder Anthony Repetto (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) and senior catcher Matt Kaldon (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) each went 2-for-3 for the Hawks in game one. O'Neill led the Sea Gulls by going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, while Griffith went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Despite outhitting the Sea Gulls in game two, the Hawks were unable to take down the sixth-ranked team in the nation, falling 4-3 after surrendering a two-run lead in the third inning.

Senior starting pitcher Chris Chismar shouldered the loss for the Hawks, allowing three earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out seven. Dan Fein grabbed the win in Saturday's second game after tossing 4.2 scoreless innings in relief of starter Brett Collacchi, striking out three while allowing five hits and two walks.

The Sea Gulls got on top in the first inning, when they scored an unearned run off a fielding error. In the third, the Hawks struck back for three runs to take the lead. Senior center fielder Matt Carr (Westbury, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) singled in sophomore right fielder Rich Guido (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) from second, and then came around to score on Repetto's infield single to give the Hawks a 2-1 edge. Repetto also scored safely on junior shortstop Steven Morse's single through the right side to give New Paltz a 3-1 advantage.

Salisbury fought back in the home half of the inning, as O'Neill singled through the right side with two outs and the bases full to tie the game with a pair of RBI. The Sea Gulls added the leading run in the following inning when third baseman Bobby Sanzone singled in right fielder Kyle Hayman, who had been standing on third after a stolen base and a passed ball.

The Hawks had a chance to tie in the seventh inning, as they rallied to put runners on the corners with two outs. However, senior third baseman Matt Prescia (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) grounded out to second, ending the Hawk threat in the final frame.

Repetto had another solid game at the plate in game two, going 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Morse batted 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Carr went 1-for-2 with an RBI, a run and his second stolen base of the season.

Griffith went 2-for-2 from the plate in the doubleheader finale, coming around to score twice in the win. O'Neill picked up another two RBI in the nightcap, while Sanzone went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

The Hawks and Sea Gulls conclude their series tomorrow, March 3, with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. from SU Baseball Field.
