SALISBURY, Md. – Senior right-hander Andrew Levy combined with sophomore righty Kyle Hamby to throw a 5-0 shutout in the first game and sophomore left-hander Dan Fein came out of the bullpen to toss 4 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball in a 4-3 win in the second to lead the No. 6 Salisbury University baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of the State University of New York at New Paltz at the SU Baseball Field on Saturday.
Levy scattered five hits and three walks over six innings while striking out two. Hamby allowed a pair of hits, but fanned one in his one inning of work. Fein relieved starter Brett Collacchi, allowing five hits and two walks with three strikeouts for Salisbury (6-1).
Junior first baseman Quinn Griffith paced the Sea Gulls' offense, going 5-for-6 with three runs scored, a double, RBI, walk and steal in the two games, including a 3-for-4 effort in the opener.
Salisbury jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning of the first game off of Andrew Grann when Ken O'Neill roped a single down the left-field line to score Griffith and Nick Gentry with one out. Gentry started the inning with a single to right-center field followed by a Griffith single to left. Evan Graci laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up for O'Neill.
SU added insurance runs in the sixth as Kyle Hayman and Johnny Schiotis started the inning with consecutive bunt singles. A pitch from Grann got through catcher Matt Kaldon, allowing Hayman to score from second and Schiotis to advance to third prior to a Bobby Sanzone sacrifice fly, pushing the lead to 4-0. Two batters later, Griffith singled home Gentry, who had walked and stole second.
Grann lasted 5 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on 11 hits and three walks. He struck out three.
Salisbury got to New Paltz game two starter Chris Chismar, a member of this week's D3baseball.com Team of the Week, in the first inning for an unearned run. Griffith doubled to right with two outs and Steven Morse committed his second error of the frame to score Griffith.
New Paltz (1-4) responded with three in the top of the third to take the lead. Matthew Carr, Anthony Repetto and Morse had RBI base hits in the frame, which saw Fein enter for Collacchi.
The Sea Gulls knotted the game, 3-3, in their half of the third. O'Neill singled through the right side of the infield with the base loaded and two out, scoring Griffith and Sanzone.
Sanzone gave Salisbury the lead for good in the forth on a chopper up the middle with Hayman on third and one out. Hayman walked to start the inning, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball.
Sanzone finished 2-for-3 with a run and RBI.
Chismar (1-1) went the distance for the Hawks, allowing five hits and four runs (three earned) with three walks and seven strikeouts.
Repetto and Morse recorded two hits apiece in the second game for New Paltz.
The teams close the series with an 11 a.m., start on Sunday.
