Box Score PATCHOGUE, N.Y.--Senior shortstop Kyle McKelvey connected for five hits and two runs batted in as the Western New England offense exploded for a season-best 14 to back a solid pitching effort in a 7-1 non-conference victory Sunday over Saint Joseph's-Long Island at Gregg Alfano Field. The nationally No. 13/22-ranked Golden Bears conclude the season-opening Farmingdale/Saint Joseph's Spring Classic with a 2-1 record, while the host Eagles fall to 1-2.

What a difference a day makes, too. Less than 24 hours earlier, Western New England couldn't get the big hit in a 6-5, extra-inning upset loss to Keene State. But this afternoon, the Golden Bears got timely hitting as their first four runs came with two outs.

"I was pretty pleased with the result today. We did a nice job of manufacturing runs after two outs," said Western New England coach Matt LaBranche. "But over the long haul we need to improve our ability to get the lead-off man aboard. That is how you create big innings."

Sophomore starting pitcher Trevor Breton, sophomore Nick Salerno and senior Kevin Jefferis combined on a two-hitter. Breton struck out six batters, gave up two hits, an earned run and walked none in six innings of work to earn the victory. Salerno retired all six batters he faced, including five via ground-out, in the seventh and eighth. Jefferis pitched a perfect ninth frame with two strikeouts.

"Our guys didn't issue a single walk, and that kind of pitching is always going to give you a good chance (to win)," LaBranche added.

Dan Diblasi had a RBI-single to knot the score at 1-all in the bottom of the fourth and Vincent Reda had a single down the right-field line in the same frame for the Eagles' only hits.

Western New England reclaimed the lead for good in the top of the fifth inning when senior Taylor Perun and McKelvey had back-to-back RBI singles for a 3-1 advantage. McKelvey also had a run-scoring double in the seventh for a three-run cushion.

Senior co-captains Matt Anthonis and Tim Clark joined McKelvey and Perun with multi-hit performances with two each.
