HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 3, 2013) – Sophomore Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.Y.) drove in senior Michael Donovan (Frisco, Texas) on a single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team a walk-off win over Lehman College, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at Dobbelaar Field. Stevens bounced back from a tough 8-7 loss to No. 24 Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday and is now 3-1 on the season.

Donovan led off the ninth with an infield single and then moved up to second on a stolen base. He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Gregg Nickels(Simpsonville, S.C.) and was pushed home by Hennelly's single to right field to win the game for Stevens.

That was the only hit and run batted in for Hennelly in the contest, while Donovan went 2-for-4 with an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. Nickels laid down two sacrifices in one official at bat.

Lehman held two leads in the game, after the top of the first inning and after the fourth. The Lightning scored the opening run after a lead-off walk, stolen base and an RBI double before any outs were recorded.

The Ducks answered with two in the bottom half of the inning after junior Curt Lowenstein (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) led off with a bunt single and then stole second. Lowenstein then advanced to third on a wild pitch and would come home to score on a Donovan single to center field. Donovan moved up to second on a misplayed ball by the Lehman outfielder and then took third on a wild pitch. He then scored before the third out was recorded on a rundown before first and second base.

Lowenstein went 2-for-4 at the plate with a stolen base, a run scored and RBI.

Lehman answered back with two runs in the fourth which knocked senior starter Kevin Mathews (Jackson, N.J.) out of the game. Mathews lasted three-plus innings and gave up three runs on four hits with one strikeout.

The Lightning tallied three-straight singles to start the fourth before fellow senior Tyler Courter (Glenwood, N.J.) entered the game. Courter walked in a run and then gave up the second on a groundout.

Courter would earn the victory after getting out of the fourth with no further damage and gave up just one hit over the final six innings of the game. He walked just one batter and struck out five, including the side in the seventh inning.

Sophomore Marc Calleo (Sayville, N.Y.) and freshmen Tyler Bush (Bristol, Conn.) and Nicholas Sieber (Shrewsbury, Mass.) all picked up one hit in three trips to that plate. Calleo also scored once, while Sieber swiped a bag.

The Ducks will be back in action on March 9 against John Jay College at home beginning at 12 p.m. The follow day, Stevens will take on the College of Staten Island in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
