Lynchburg Gets Outlasted by Averett, fall 8-5

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team dropped a tough game on Tuesday, falling to a hard-hitting Averett University squad, 8-5, in non-conference action.

The Hornets and Cougars went back and forth through the first four innings, with Averett scoring in the first and third while Lynchburg answered in the second and fourth for a 2-2 tie.

Averett opened the game up from there, scoring six runs in the next two innings.

Lynchburg tried to answer the Cougar onslaught as sophomore Lincoln Evans led off the fifth with a bunt single. Following a fly out, junior Jake Tanner singled, advancing Evans to second. A walk to the three-hole hitter, senior Brock Shiflett, brought senior Dan Savage to the plate with the bases loaded. Savage singled home Evans in front of a fielder's choice by Arrowood that plated Tanner, cutting the lead to 6-4.

Evans made an impact in the sixth inning as well, tripling to right field with two outs. Senior Michael Kenah singled Evans home, cutting the lead to 8-5, but the scoring would end as the bullpens closed it out for both clubs.

Evans collected a career high in hits going 4-for-4, while sophomore Jay Kenyon connected on his first career homerun. The blast ricocheted off a tree 20 feet above the outfield fence in left and returned to play, making the score 2-2.

Averett (15-3) was led by three hits and three RBI from Jeffrey Younkins. The Cougars drew nine walks, but only scored one of those as the Hornets caused Averett to strand 15 runners on base.

Lynchburg (6-7) continues the home stand with a non-conference matchup with Ferrum College (7-10) on Wednesday at 2 p.m., weather permitting. Stay tuned to athletics.lynchburg.edu for more details.
