SWARTHMORE, Pa. (March 5, 2013) – In the final game before heading south to Fort Myers, Fla., the Drew baseball team defeated Swarthmore, 8-1 on the road. The game was called after eight innings due to darkness. The Garnet drop to 0-2 on the season while the Rangers improve to 3-0.

Five players for the Rangers put together multiple-hit efforts, highlighted by Mark Alessio (Nutley, N.J./Paramus Catholic) who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a walk. Senior Michael Bodden (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) also collected two hits and scored twice.

Making his first start of the season, junior Ken Myers (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) was solid, pitching five innings and allowing only one run. He scattered six hits and struck out three to earn his first win of the spring. Freshman Drew Blanco (Edison, N.J./John P. Stevens) closed the door, pitching three scoreless innings and striking out three to earn his first career save.

The Rangers jumped on the Garnet early, posting three runs in the first two innings. After a Garnet error in the first inning, freshman Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Prep) singled home Steve Kowalski (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville). Alessio came around on the second error of the inning to make the score 2-0.

Myers pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the third after three-straight singles by the Garnet. A sacrifice fly that scored Sean Bryant would be the only run that Swarthmore could muster out of the frame.

Drew scored three more runs in the top of the fifth with RBI singles from Alessio, Anthony Feltre (South Brunswick, N.J./Metuchen) and Bobby Miskura (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford). Alessio capped the Drew scoring off in the top of the eighth with a double to center that scored Kowalski.

The Rangers will head south this weekend for five scheduled games as a part of the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. The first game is slated for Sunday at 1:00 p.m. against Bethel University.

Tomorrow's game against Franklin & Marshall has been cancelled due to impending inclement weather.
