Winter Haven, FL --- WPI took two tough losses to Wittenberg University on Monday in non-conference baseball action on Monday afternoon in Winter Haven, Florida, losing a heart-breaking 1-0 game one before falling 5-3 in game two. The Tigers of Wittenberg are now 3-0 while the Engineers of WPI fall to 1-3. 

In game one, freshman Craig Teed (Stratham, NH) pitched well for the Crimson and Gray, delivering a shutout through five-and-two-thirds innings before allowing an RBI single to center in the top of the sixth. Teed finished with six innings of work, giving up only two hits. Wittenberg countered, however, with senior pitcher Zach Finke (Maineville, Ohio) pitching a gem, giving up only three hits and no runs while striking out seven in seven innings. Junior left fielder David Trujillo (Sutton, MA), freshman first baseman Alex Venditti (Newton, MA) and junior designated hitter Sean Kelly (Shrewsbury, MA) each recorded a hit for WPI. 

Game two saw the Engineers get on the board early, with senior catcher Shane Sampson (Worcester, MA) hitting a sacrifice RBI to center to score sophomore shortstop Steve Petry (Worcester, MA). After the Tigers tied it up, junior third baseman Tim Erlandson (Hudson, MA) had an RBI single down the right field line, scoring Trujillo and putting WPI up 2-1. Down 5-2 and down to their last three outs in the top of the seventh, WPI took advantage of two Wittenberg errors to score a third run before coming up short. Freshman pitcher Miles Schuler (Murrieta, CA) struck out four in five-and-a-third innings for the Engineers. 

Up next for WPI, the team plays a double-header on Wednesday against Penn State Altoona in Auburndale, Florida. The first game comes at noon.
