FORT MYERS, Fla. – Nick Rossmiller (Butler, Pa./Butler) improved to 2-0 on the season and hit the first home run of the year for Thiel, as the Tomcat baseball team earned a 9-3 victory over Wilmington College of Ohio Thursday afternoon.

Rossmiller threw seven strong innings for the Tomcats, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Hitting as the designated hitter in the batting order, Rossmiller went 1-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored, two RBIs and a walk.

Corey Walker and Hunter Justus each had a pair of hits to lead Wilmington (3-3) at the plate.

Jake Vinkovich fell to 1-2 with the loss, allowing three runs on six hits with a one strikeout and two walks. Reid Wurtz and Cameron Schwalbach each threw an inning of relief in the loss for the Quakers.

The Tomcats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Nick Schiavonni (Boiling Spring, Pa./Trinity) scored on a double play turned by the Quakers. With both Rossmiller and Vinkovich locked in a dual on the mound, the Thiel 1-0 lead held until the bottom of the sixth, when Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin)'s two-run double and a Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) RBI single helped the Tomcats extend their lead to 4-0 over Wilmington.

After the Quakers scored three runs in the top of the seventh to narrow the lead down to 4-3, Thiel added three more in the bottom of the seventh, keyed by a RBI single by Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) and Rossmiller's two-run home run, his first as a Tomcat, to increase the Thiel lead to 7-3.

A Schiavonni RBI single and Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) scoring on a wild pitch in the eighth pushed the Tomcat led to six, 9-3.

Riley Schwertz (Zelienople, Pa./Freedom) worked hitless eighth and ninth innings to close out the Quakers and secure the win for Thiel.

Thiel returns to action Friday, March 8, when they take on Neumann University at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. The game is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
