LaGRANGE, Ga. -- The fifth-ranked Christopher Newport baseball team saw it's six-game winning streak snapped on the road Friday, as LaGrange College (8-8, 7-6) earned a series-opening victory, 3-1. Captains starter Austin Chrismon (3-2) went the distance for CNU, but suffered his second complete-game loss of the year as the offense couldn't get anything going. CNU falls to 15-3-1 overall, and 11-2 in the USA South.

Playing in their first night game of the year, the Captains sent junior transfer Chrismon to the mound to open the conference series. He scattered eight hits and allowed just three runs in a complete game effort, striking out eight for CNU. He was saddled with the loss, though, as the offense managed just five hits against the Panthers.

LaGrange scratched across a run each in the bottom of the first and second innings, and that would be enough. After a lead-off double by Jon Brock, LaGrange sacrificed him to third and he scored on an RBI groundout by Brent Kinsey. Then, in the second, Brandon Espinosa singled home another run after two outs.

The Panthers added an insurance run in the fifth, as Brock doubled again, scoring on a wild pitch later in the inning.

The CNU offense showed a little life in the seventh inning, getting the first two batters on base via a walk. Travis Younger and Tommy Kane both reached with free passes. Younger would then score on an infield single by Andy Viands, but the Captains would strand two more runners on in the inning to end the comeback threat.

Senior Drew Williamson pitched six strong innings for the home team, picking up his first win of the season with four hits allowed and four strikeouts. Tyler Brooks pitched two innings for the save, his third of the year.

CNU will return to Cleaveland Field for game two of the series on Saturday, with first pitch set for 2:00 pm. Live stats and live video is available at CNUsports.com
