Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State baseball team team swept Plattsburgh State in two 9-inning games today in Farmingdale, N.Y. The Rams improved to 5-6 overall with the wins, while the Cardinals fall to 0-2.
In game one, the Rams scored four runs in both the first and second innings, with a combined seven hits, to build up an 8-0 lead. The first inning was highlighted by a two-RBI single down the left field line by freshman third baseman Jorge Ruiz (Shirley, N.Y.). In the second, freshman designated hitter Dalton McCarthy (Manorville, N.Y.) doubled to right field to score two runs.
Both teams scored one run in the fifth, before Plattsburgh made a run in the top of the ninth with three runs. Freshman Justin Schwartz (West Babylon, N.Y.) pitched the final inning to preserve a 9-4 Rams victory. Senior pitcher Anthony Eilers (Bay Shore, N.Y.) earned the win after allowing one run and three hits over five innings of work.
Senior left fielder David Zilnicki (Riverhead, N.Y.) stole his 38th career base today, which passed former record holder Luis Feliciano for most stolen bases in school history.
Game 2
In the bottom of the eighth inning, senior right fielder Terrence Bohonan (Patchogue, N.Y.) led off with a single up the middle. Senior first baseman Ron Remi (Massapequa, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch and awarded first base, putting runners on first and second with no outs. After a Rams lineout, a double steal put both runners in scoring position with one out.
Senior catcher Eric Wiener (Deer Park, N.Y.) converted a suicide squeeze, which scored pinch runner Nick Ventricelli (Woodbury, N.Y.) for a 1-0 Farmingdale State lead.
In the top of the ninth, junior pitcher James Powers (Jamesport, N.Y.) recorded the first two outs, before junior Timmy Trimarchi (Hauppauge, N.Y.) came in to force a groundout and pick up his second save of the season. Powers earned the win to improve to 2-1 on the year, after throwing 3.2 scoreless innings in relief. Starting pitcher Michael Dolce (St. James, N.Y.) allowed no runs and struck out four over five innings.
Farmingdale State next will host Southern Maine on Saturday, March 16th at 1:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 17th at 12:00 p.m.
