Hoboken, N.J. – Kennedy Tavarez stole second base twice and scored CCNY's two runs and Mike Smith struck out two Ducks in 2.0 scoreless innings out of the bullpen but eight pitchers combined to allow just five hits as the City College of New York (0-7) fell to future conference member Stevens Institute of Technology (6-2), 10-2 on Wednesday afternoon at Dobbelaar Field.

The Ducks are scheduled to join the City University of New York Athletic Conference in baseball beginning with the 2013-14 season.

Anthony Colon (0-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs – five earned – in 4.0 innings of work. Colon threw two scoreless innings (second and fourth) but a five-run third inning broke the game wide open for the Ducks. Max Mueller allowed just one earned run in 3.0 innings out of the bullpen while Smith allowed just one base runner. Pierce Marston (1-0) picked up the win after striking out the side in his lone inning.

Eric Quatrone highlighted a strong defense with two diving catches while Jaquan Murphy made a sliding grab  as well.

The Ducks struck first, scoring two runs in the opening frame before putting up five runs on four hits in the third inning to take a 7-0 lead.

Tavarez walked to begin the bottom of the fourth inning and stole second to give the Beavers a runner in scoring position with no outs. After moving 90 feet away from home plate on a fly out by Smith, Tavarez came around to score on a throwing error by pitcher Craig Leopold to cut the Ducks' lead to 7-1.

After 4.0 no-hit innings, Emmanuel Nwokelo and Matt Sola-Baker reached on back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second with no outs. However, runners were stranded after the Ducks pitched their way out of trouble.

Stevens Tech added three runs in the seventh to take a nine-run lead, 10-1.

Tavarez led off the bottom of the eighth with a single thru the left side before swiping second base and advancing to third on a wild pitch. Smith plated Tavarez with an RBI ground out to cut CCNY's deficit to 10-2.

The Beavers head to Randall's Island Field 53 for a doubleheader against the Fighting Blue Jays of NYU-Poly on Saturday, March 16 before playing two on Sunday at Maritime College.
