WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Westfield State University baseball team opened its 2013 season with a 10-9, 10-1 double header sweep of Rhode Island College on Wednesday, March 13, at Chain of Lakes Park.

Senior outfielder Andrew Medeiros slugged two home runs in the opener – a screaming liner over the left field fence followed by a no doubt shot later in the game. Also hammering a homer was sophomore designated hitter Nick Champeau.

Westfield snapped a 9-all tie by scoring a run in the top of the seventh and final inning as freshman shortstop Connor Sheridan of South Hadley beat out an infield grounder to score Kevin Greene from third base.

Junior Kevin Zyrkowski was lights out in the bottom of the seventh to earn the pitching save.

In the nightcap, Westfield broke up a tight game in the middle innings. The Owls' top hitters were Medeiros, Champeau, sophomore first baseman Dan Rokitowski and freshman Matt Ferrelli.

Sophomore Mike Molta hurled the first six innings to notch the pitching victory.

Complete game details, including box scores, will be posted on the Owl website Thursday afternoon.

Westfield is idle Thursday and returns to action on Friday when it plays Roger Williams (R.I.) University. The twinbill begins at 1:30 p.m. at Chain of Lakes Park.
