AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Albion College baseball coach Scott Carden was encouraged by what he saw as his team challenged a University of Mount Union squad that would be comparable to the top teams in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Despite being within striking distance late in both games, the Britons came away with 4-1 and 12-3 losses.
Albion led in both contests.
In the first inning of game one, Davin Montgomery laced a two-out double and Eric Shimmel followed with a RBI single. The lead held up until the third when Mount Union plated three runs. The Purple Raiders added a run in the fourth. Albion squandered a scoring chances in the fourth and sixth innings, stranding a pair of runners in the frames.
Albion took a 3-0 lead in game two as Montomery slugged a three-run double in the third. Mount Union answered with three in its half of the third and it took the lead by plating three in the fifth. The Purple Raiders put the game out of reach by tacking on six runs in the sixth.
Albion completes its spring break trip Saturday with a nine-inning game against St. Norbert. Bobby Lee, Albion's director of news & sports information, will provide the play-by-play for the internet broadcast with programming beginning at 9:20 a.m.
