Averett Storm Past Hornets 9-4, Lynchburg to Host Kids Run the Show Night Fri.

DANVILLE, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team scored the first two runs of the game, but Averett University plated the next nine on its way to a 9-4 victory Wednesday in non-conference baseball action.

The Hornets showed promise early, scoring in the first inning despite having two outs and no one on base. Senior Michael Kenah drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch before senior Brock Shiflett doubled him home, giving him at least one RBI in each of the Hornets' last three games.

Kenah was started the action in the third inning as well, doubling to left-center field. Shiflett sent a deep fly ball to center that advanced Kenah to third where he scored on a passed ball.

Lynchburg freshman Matt Matthews, starting on the mound, made easy work of the Cougars in the first two innings while facing the minimum six batters and striking out three.

Averett started to figure out Matthews in the third inning, the second time the lineup was seeing the freshman. The Cougars collected three hits in the third, scoring two runs to tie the game.

The Cougars added seven runs in the fifth through the seventh innings to pull ahead to a 9-2 advantage.

Sophomore Reid Goss pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Hornets to keep the Cougars at bay to end the game.

Lynchburg attempted one last rally in the ninth, getting RBIs from Kenah and Shiflett but the Averett closer, Chris Moyer, was able to get out of the jam.

Shiflett and sophomore Joe Rogers had two hits apiece for the Hornets while the former added two RBI.

Jimbo Newcomb had three hits for the Cougars (19-9), while Jordan Kidd added three RBI.

Lynchburg (11-10) hosts Tufts University (5-1) Friday night at 5 p.m. at City Stadium. It will be Kids Run the Show Night for the Hornets. Check out LC Athletics on Facebook for more information.
