St. Mary's City, Md. – Sophomore first baseman Jared Eaker (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) and first-year lefty Ben Goldsmith (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) combined to propel the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team to a 6-5 Capital Athletic Conference win over No. 1 Salisbury University Sunday afternoon, giving the Seahawks a 2-1 mark in the series against Salisbury.
With two outs on the board and runners on first and second in the bottom of the seventh, Eaker hit a single through the left side to score sophomore second baseman Luke Green (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic). Green, who notched the game-winning run in the first half of yesterday's doubleheader, singled to right field and then advanced to second on sophomore leftfielder Brad Dioguardo's (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) ground out to second base.
Sophomore centerfielder Paul Roemer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) then put an end to Salisbury's rally in the ninth as Roemer made a diving catch to his left for the third and final out of the game.
Goldsmith relieved senior starter Devon Jerrard (Hunt Valley, Md./Boys' Latin) in the seventh to tally the final out, making senior designated hitter Evan Graci (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) swing and miss to hold Salisbury (15-4, 4-2 CAC) to four runs and keep the game tied at 5-5. Goldsmith then kept the Sea Gulls scoreless for the final two innings, giving up just two hits and striking out three with no walks in 2.1 innings for his first win of the season.
All 11 runs were scored in the sixth and seventh innings while St. Mary's became the first team to score a run on this week's CAC Co-Pitcher of the Week, sophomore southpaw Dan Fein (Southbury, Conn./Pomperau). Fein entered today's game not having surrendered a run (earned or unearned) in 26.1 consecutive innings. He finished today's action with a no-decision after allowing five runs (all unearned) on six hits in 5.1 innings with two strikeouts and one walk.
Dioguardo and sophomore designated hitter Zach Nadolny (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) paced the Seahawks (9-14, 2-4 CAC) at the plate with two hits each while Nadolny drove in two runs.
Salisbury scored first in the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth, before St. Mary's staked a 5-1 advantage in the sixth. The Sea Gulls committed four errors in St. Mary's half of the sixth inning, allowing the Seahawks to score five runs.
Senior right fielder Nick Gentry (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) led Salisbury's attack with a 4-of-5 effort at the plate, connecting on his third double of the season, while juniors Quinn Griffith (Federalsburg, Md./North Caroline) and Chris Gaines (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) each added a pair of hits.
Salisbury's senior Danny Druzgala (Ellicott City, Md./Mount St. Joseph's) came in for Fein one out into the sixth inning and was saddled with the loss. Druzgala pitched 2.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits with one strikeout and one walk.
St. Mary's will continue conference play on Friday, March 29 when the Seahawks welcome York College of Pennsylvania to the Hawk's Nest for a league single game at 3:30 pm.
