Rams Split Doubleheader at Old Westbury

Old Westbury, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State baseball team split a Skyline Conference doubleheader at Old Westbury on Sunday afternoon. The Rams now hold a 9-9 overall record and are 3-1 in the Skyline.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the second inning, senior catcher Eric Wiener (Deer Park, N.Y.) hit a 2 RBI single to left field to put the Rams ahead 2-1. In Farmingdale State's next at-bat, sophomore second baseman Tom Rydzewski (Franklin Square, N.Y.) hit an RBI single up the middle to increase the lead to 3-1.

The Panthers (6-8, 3-1) responded with two runs in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game at 3-3.

With two runners in scoring position and one out in the fourth, Rydzewski's 2 RBI single to right field gave the Rams a 5-3 lead. Rydzewski stole a pair of bases and later scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore shortstop Anthony Alvino (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) to extend the advantage to 6-3. Freshman designated hitter Dalton McCarthy (Manorville, N.Y.) plated Farmingdale State's fourth run of the inning on an RBI single up the middle.

After Old Westbury pulled within 7-4, the Rams added the games final run in the sixth to earn an 8-4 victory in game one.

Rydzewski was 3-for-5 at the plate with a run scored, 3 RBI and three stolen bases, while senior left fielder David Zilnicki (Riverhead, N.Y.) had two hits, a run scored, an RBI and three stolen bases. Wiener was 1-for-1 with two runs scored and 2 RBI for Farmingdale State.

Junior pitcher Michael Dolce (St. James, N.Y.) earned the win after allowing one run on two hits in three innings of relief.

In game two, the Panthers held a 5-0 lead after two innings and a 13-0 advantage through five innings. The Rams tallied three runs in the top of the sixth but eventually fell 19-3.

Junior left fielder Justin Steigerwald (Holbrook, N.Y.) was 3-for-3 with an RBI for Farmingdale State.

Old Westbury was led by senior catcher Paul Valerio (Merrick, N.Y.) who was 4-for-5 with four runs scored and junior left fielder John Angelino (Shirley, N.Y.) who had three hits and scored two runs.

The Rams next will host Baruch in a single 9-inning game on Tuesday, March 26th at 3:30 p.m.
