Lakeland, FL: The #13 Ramapo College baseball team came back to defeat Springfield College today at Henley Field, 9-7. The Roadrunners improve to 8-1 overall while Springfield falls to 3-4.
Springfield took a two run lead in the first inning before Ramapo tied the game at two in the bottom of the third inning, 2-2. Senior Christian Spurr drove home senior Dave Jacob from third base before sophomore Ian Osterman drove home Spurr on a sacrifice fly to center field.
Springfield scored one run in the fourth and fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead. The Roadrunners came back to tie the game at four in the fifth inning. Osterman singled up the middle to lead off before sophomore Chris Werr was hit by a pitch to put runner's on first and second. Sophomore Zach Carroll put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up one base before rookie Joe Venturino lifted a sac fly to center field, plating Osterman. Werr would come around to score on an error to tie the game, 4-4.
The Roadrunners scored two runs in the sixth on three hits to take a 6-4 lead. Osterman ripped a double to right center field with two outs as Spurr came around to score. Werr then knocked home Osterman on a single to left field.
Ramapo saw their lead get erased in the eighth as Springfield scored three runs to take a 7-6 lead. The Roadrunners would come back and take a 9-7 lead in the bottom half of the inning. Spurr led off with a single to center field before advancing to second base on a wild pitch. Osterman then laced a single to center field, allowing Spurr to come around and touch home plate. Junior John Capuano drove home the game winning run with a single to left field as Caroll and Ostermann came around to score for the 9-7 lead.
Ramapo held Springfield in the top of the ninth to earn their eighth win of the season. Jacob, Osterman and Capuano all recorded three hits for Ramapo. Osterman was 3-3 with three runs scored and three RBI while Capuano was 3-5 with two RBI.
Doyle earned the win in relief as he raised his record to 2-0. He fired the final 1.2 innings of the game, scattering three hits. Ramapo starting pitcher Jimmy Knight worked the first three innings, as he struck out one and walked two. Sophomore Kyle Doerr worked 4.1 innings, scattering six hits and striking out six.
Ramapo returns to action tomorrow against Amherst College with two seven-inning games beginning at 1:30pm.
