NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Sophomore Adam Emerson (3-1) picked up his second win in relief in as many games, and senior Ryan Fleischmann broke his own single season record for saves as the eighth-ranked Christopher Newport baseball team defeated Virginia Wesleyan Thursday, 6-3. The Captains (22-7-1) picked up their third straight win, while the Marlins slip to 6-17 overall this year.

Fleischmann tossed a scoreless ninth inning, striking out a pair, for his 11th save of the season. The mark breaks his own record, set in 2012, for the single season record at Christopher Newport. It also moved him into sole possession of fourth all-time at the NCAA Division III level, with 29 career saves.

Sophomore transfer Brett Mays started for the Captains, giving up three earned runs in four innings pitched. He was relieved by Emerson in the fifth inning, who went two scoreless to pick up his third win of the season.

CNU scored two runs in the first without getting a hit, as Reed Duffer struggled for the Marlins. After two quick outs, Duffer hit the next three batters and walked a pair to get CNU out in front. Jacob Houston and Travis Younger earned the RBI free passes.

Virginia Wesleyan tied things up with a two-run single up the middle by Scott Montgomery, but CNU answered in the third to take the lead for good. Houston picked up another RBI with a single through the left side, while rookie Kyle Corwin and sophomore Tommy Kane added RBI singles in the inning.

Both teams tacked on runs in the fourth for the final score of 6-3. CNU was issued 10 free passes, with seven walks and three hit-by-pitch, and had eight hits. Senior Christopher McDougal was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, while Houston went 2-for-2 with the two runs batted in.

Senior Matt Verdillo had a strong relief appearance, tossing two scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.

The Marlins were led by Montgomery, with a 3-for-4 day driving in a pair and scoring once. Kenneth Belgrave (2-for-4, 1 RBI) and Casey Bryant (2-for-3) added multi-hit performances for VWC.

Christopher Newport is back in action at home on Saturday, March 30 with a doubleheader against Bridgewater College with first pitch set for 1:00 pm.
