NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The eighth-ranked Christopher Newport Captains (25-8-1) shut out the Newport News Apprentice School (25-5) on Senior Day Thursday, winning by an 8-0 final. CNU sophomore Jordan Boze (3-0) tossed a six-inning gem as the Captains snapped a seven-game win streak for the Builders, ranked No. 1 in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA).

Boze lumbered early for the Captains, allowing two hits and two walks the first time through the order. He managed to escape unscathed, though, stranding three runners and getting a key double play in the second.

After the third, Boze settled in with just two base runners allowed. He retired the last eight batters he faced with a strikeout and seven infield outs. He finished with a line of 6.0 innings pitched, three hits allowed, three walks and three strikeouts.

Before leaving the game, the Captains offense staked Boze to a big lead, scoring all eight runs in the first six innings. Rookie Kyle Corwin drove in a run in the second with a groundout and CNU tacked on two more when Justin Weaver doubled home a pair in the third.

In the fifth inning, CNU scored two more with two outs when Corwin singled up the middle, plating Travis Younger and Weaver. Then, in the sixth, Weaver added his third RBI with a sacrifice fly, followed by a run-scoring single from Jacob Houston.

In relief, CNU sent in sophomore Adam Emerson for the seventh. He struck out a pair and then gave way to Garrett Chrismon for two effective innings to close out the game. Seniors Ryan Fleischmann and Matt Verdillo, accustomed to ending the game with their arms on the mound, combined to finish out the game in a different fashion Thursday. Entered into the Senior Day game on the right side of the infield, Corwin tossed to Fleischmann who relayed on to Verdillo for a game-ending double play.

Apprentice was led by designated hitter Jordan Cowles, who went 3-for-4 with a double and two singles. Trevin Wilson was the only other Builder who mustered a hit against the Captains pitching staff, going 1-for-4.

On the hill, Apprentice saw Taylor Gomer fall to 3-2 this season, giving up three runs and four walks in 3.2 innings pitched.

Christopher Newport got a 4-for-4 day out of freshman Travis Younger, with a sacrifice bunt. He scored once and drove in one. Corwin and Weaver finished with a team-high three RBI, and designated hitter Andy Viands added a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

The Captains now turn their focus to the final USA South Athletic Conference series of the year as they travel to N.C. Wesleyan this weekend. The Bishops, currently in second place, are two games behind CNU for the regular season title. The schedule has changed for this weekend's series, with a doubleheader now scheduled for Noon on Saturday, April 6.
