Providence, R.I.-Senior shortstop Zach Hubbard (Kissimmee, FL) pounded out five hits on the afternoon for Rhode Island College as the Anchormen dropped both ends of a doubleheader with UMass Boston in Little East Conference action at Anchorman Field on Saturday.

Rhode Island College (6-17, 1-3 LEC) fell in the first game, 6-2, and also came up empty in the second tilt, 8-2.

In game one, sophomore left-hander Kyle Szatrowski (Agawam, MA) hurled a gem for UMass Boston (8-8, 4-0 LEC) to improve his record to a perfect 4-0. The southpaw scattered just two runs on seven hits and three walks in 6.2 innings, while chalking up six strikeouts.

The Beacons scratched an early run off of RIC senior right-hander David Hoey (Lincoln, RI) in the second inning thanks to an RBI single from freshman first baseman Kurtis White (Nahant, MA) which plated senior third baseman Matt Consiglio (Southbury, CT) to make it, 1-0.

After three quiet innings, UMass Boston tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth to extend its lead to four. Consiglio knocked in junior second baseman Jose Pena (Boston, MA) with a sacrifice fly for the first run of the frame, while sophomore center fielder Charles LaPaglia (Marshfield, MA) and freshman designated hitter Gerard Florentino (West Roxbury, MA) each followed with RBI singles to give the Beacons a 4-0 advantage.

Following an RBI double from Pena in the top of the seventh that pushed UMB's lead to five, the Anchormen bounced back with some much-needed offense in the bottom half of the frame to pull within three. Senior center fielder Kevin Carey (Wakefield, RI) laced a two-run triple down the right field line that plated both Hubbard and freshman third baseman Justin Costa (Cranston, RI) and made it, 5-2.

However, the Beacons added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, as the visitors tacked on their sixth run of the game on an RBI single off the bat of junior right fielder Jamill Moquette (Boston, MA).

Meanwhile, Rhode Island College had no answer for UMB junior right-hander Tyler Kane (Wilbraham, MA), who came on to pitch in relief of Szatrowski. Kane conceded just one walk in 2.1 scoreless innings on the hill to close out the game for the Beacons en route to his second save of the season.

Hoey took the loss, falling to 1-2 on the season. The right-hander allowed four runs (five earned) on 12 hits and one walk, while fanning two along the way.

In game two, UMB sophomore left-hander Patrick Austin (Torrington, CT) picked up where Szatrowski left off, as the southpaw gave up just two runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out three en route to his first win of the season (1-0).

After the Beacons jumped out to 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth following an RBI sacrifice fly from Florentino that scored Moquette, the visitors surged ahead for three more runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to four. Pena kicked off the scoring barrage with an RBI single to center field, while Consiglio followed with a two-run single that scored both Moquette and Pena to make it, 4-0.

The Anchormen scratched their only two runs of the game in the fifth inning after freshman catcher Matt Foley (Seekonk, MA) launched an RBI triple into right center field that scored Carey, while junior first baseman Justin Rainville (Cumberland, RI) followed with an RBI single to center field that scored Foley.

The Beacons continued to roll late in the game as they tacked on a single run in the sixth thanks to an RBI double from freshman left fielder Nick Brothers (Fort Myers, FL) and added three more runs in the seventh after an RBI single from Florentino and a two-run double off the bat of freshman first baseman Jason Cholish (Exton, PA).

UMB junior right-hander Lucas Ilges (Gloucester, MA) was fantastic in relief, as he retired 11 straight batters and racked up six strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work.

On the other end, Rhode Island College senior right-hander Chris Mann (West Warwick, RI) was stellar in relief as well. Mann scattered just two walks in 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, striking out a pair along the way.

Meanwhile, RIC junior left-hander C.J. Tsoumakas (Hope, RI) was tagged with the loss and falls to 0-5 on the year.

Moquette spearheaded the UMB offensive attack with a 4-for-9 performance at the dish that included a double, an RBI, three stolen bases, and four runs scored. Brothers went 4-for-8 with a double and an RBI, while freshman shortstop Tyler Kirwan (Syracuse, NY) went 4-for-7 with two runs scored.

Aside from Hubbard's big day at the plate, Foley went 3-for-8 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored for RIC, while Carey also went 3-for-8 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Johnson & Wales on Monday, April 8 (3:30 p.m.).
