BRONX, N.Y. – Behind great starting pitching, the Lehman College baseball team swept a vital doubleheader from CUNY Athletic Conference rival City College on Saturday, 12-4 and 6-3. The Lightning improve to 8-9 overall, and are now 4-3 in the CUNYAC. CCNY drops to 3-17 overall, and 1-7 CUNYAC.

In the opener, sophomore right hander Wilfredo Gonzalez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond's) was masterful on the mound, striking out eight through six innings, as the Lightning rolled. He was supported by an offensive barrage, as Lehman scored runs in five different innings.

The Lightning got five runs in the first inning on six hits, with none bigger than a two run double off the bat of junior third baseman Alberto German (Santo Domingo, D.R./Cenapec). Later in the inning, catcher Onix Mejia (Corona, N.Y./Renaissance Charter) also had a two RBI base hit.

The Lightning eventually built a 10-0 lead after four innings, and went on for the win. Mejia had three hits in the game, with three RBI. Starting second baseman Miguel Nunez (Santo Domingo, D.R./George Washington) also had three hits, with 2 RBI and three runs scored.

In Game Two, junior Michael Santana (Bronx, N.Y.) settled down after some early jitters, and fanned nine batters in seven innings, while allowing three runs on five hits. All three runs, and three of the CCNY hits, came in the final frame.

At the plate, Lehman scored in each of the first three innings to quiet City College. Second baseman Russbert Eugenio (Bronx, N.Y./Environmental Studies) singled home right fielder Kevin Hernandez (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) in the bottom of the first inning. In the second, Alberto German and Miguel Nunez both scored, with Michael Liang (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center) coming across in the third.

Eugenio added a pair of insurance runs with a two RBI homerun to left field in the Lehman sixth.

The Lightning look to complete the three game sweep on Sunday, April 7, in a game to be played at Salesian High School, in suburban New Rochelle, N.Y., at 1:00 p.m.
