Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State baseball team swept Mount Saint Mary College in a Skyline Conference doubleheader this afternoon. Freshman pitcher Alex Weingarten (East Rockaway, N.Y.) lost a no-hitter with two outs in the seventh inning of game two. The Rams improved to 12-9 overall and 5-1 in conference play, while the Knights fell to 6-9, 1-5.

Farmingdale State broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third as Tom Rydzewski (Franklin Square, N.Y.) scored on an Anthony Alvino (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) fielders choice. The Rams took a 2-0 lead on a sacrifice fly to right field by freshman designated hitter Dalton McCarthy (Manorville, N.Y.).

After the Rams increased their lead to 3-0, Mount Saint Mary scored two runs in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to 3-2. Farmingdale State answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth on a 2 RBI single up the middle by Rydzewski, scoring Eric Wiener (Deer Park, N.Y.) and Ron Remi (Massapequa, N.Y.).

In the eighth, senior center fielder David Zilnicki (Riverhead, N.Y.) hit an inside the park grand slam to give the Rams a 9-2 lead.

The Knights added one run in the ninth but fell 9-3 in game one.

Zilnicki was 2-for-4 at the plate with 4 RBI and three runs scored, while Remi was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Junior pitcher Michael Dolce (St. James, N.Y.) improved to 3-0 on the season after allowing one earned run and three hits in 6.1 innings of work.

In the second game, Rydzewski led off the bottom of the first with a single to right and later scored on a Zilnicki RBI single to the pitcher to take an early 1-0 lead.

A Rydzewski RBI triple and an RBI groundout by Alvino put Farmingdale State ahead 3-0 in the third inning.

The Rams added three runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 10-0 lead heading into the last inning.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, freshman left fielder Mike Leone (Staten Island, N.Y.) single to right center to break up Weingarten's no-hit bid.

Weingarten improved to 1-2 on the year after throwing a complete game allowing one unearned run and striking out four.

Junior third baseman Daniel Paccione (Commack, N.Y.) was 2-for-2 with a pair of triples and three runs scored, while Rydzewski was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Farmingdale State next will travel to Maritime for a Skyline doubleheader on Sunday, April 7th at 11:00 a.m.
