Bridgewater Rolls Past Ferrum, 19-2

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Kyle Henshaw pitched a complete-game three-hitter and Jonathan Mason hit a pair of two-run homers to lead the Bridgewater College Eagles past Ferrum College, 19-2, Monday afternoon in a non-conference baseball matchup.

Henshaw was in command throughout as he struck out eight and walked just one. After allowing a one-out single in the first to Matt Reynolds, Henshaw retired 14 in a row before Jeffrey Swoope led off the sixth with a homer down the right field line. Ferrum added another run on a throwing error in the sixth.

The Eagles jumped on top in the first when Nick Fulk singled and Mason belted the first of his two homers for a 2-0 Bridgewater lead.

Bridgewater added another run in the second when Christian Armstrong reached on a two-base error by the centerfielder and scored on a single by Fulk, making the score 3-0.

The Eagles tacked on three more in the fourth to lead 6-0. Zach Hynes was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and he went to third on a double by Armstrong. With one out, Fulk walked to load the bases and Bryan Sanderson followed with a two-run double to right-center, making the score 5-0. Mason plated another run with a sacrifice fly to put the Eagles on top by six runs.

After Ferrum scored two in the top of the sixth, the Eagles answered with one in the bottom half of the inning. With one out Fulk tripled to the gap in left-center and scored on a single by Mason for a 7-2 Bridgewater lead.

The Eagles put the game away with seven runs in the seventh. Armstrong, Fulk and Cavin Clyde each had run-scoring singles and Sanderson belted a run-scoring double, making the score 12-2. Mason capped the outburst with a two-run homer to put the Eagles on top 14-2.

The Eagles added five more in the ninth to finish the contest. Matt Maher drove home two runs with a bases-loaded single and Spencer Steele and Steven Woerner each added a run-scoring single during the inning.

Mason finished with six RBIs on a 3-for-4 day at the plate. Fulk was 4-for-4 with four runs scored and one RBI and Sanderson finished 2-for-5 with three runs batted in. Ryan Smith and Armstrong each added two hits to the Eagles 17-hit attack.

With the victory, Bridgewater improves to 22-7 on the season while Ferrum drops to 12-21. The Eagles return to action Wednesday when they make the short trip to Harrisonburg to play Eastern Mennonite.
