WATERVILLE, ME- Thomas was able to come away with a sweep over Lyndon State on Saturday afternoon in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) baseball doubleheader. With the win the Terriers improve to 3-11, while Lyndon drops to 0-10.
GAME ONE
The Terriers were able to capitalize on a big first inning, where they batted through the lineup plating home five runs, which ended up being all they needed in a 5-4 win.
Jeffrey Richardson (Rochester, N.H.) doubled to right center, scoring Brett Sommers (Palm Bay, Fla.) from second, then Richardson would cross the plate on a double steal. Tim Locke (Waterville, Maine) would then drive in Derek Kane (Natick, Mass.) on a fielder's choice. Zack Groat (West Bath, Maine) and Tim Bradford (Richmond, Maine) would count for the other two RBI in the big first inning for the Terriers.
After surrendering just two hits in the first inning, starter Jake Chamblee (South Berwick, Maine) surrendered the first Hornet run in the top of the third as Tyler Pelletier (St. Albans, Vt.) singled to right to score Kyle Whitworth (Brattleboro, Vt.) from second.
Lyndon would add to its score in the bottom of the fifth as Robert Trucott (Sheffield, Vt.) would drive in two on a bases loaded single to center. A double to left field by Michael Cartularo (Lyndonville, Vt.) would score another, as the Hornets would decrease the deficit to just one.
Lyndon would be unable to cut the deficit, as Isiah Flemming (Fairfield, Maine) held the opponents hitless in two innings of relief, striking out two and recording his first collegiate save.
Chamblee was credited with the win, pitching five innings, striking out three, while giving up four earned runs.
Isaac Earle (Vernon, Vt.) was charged with the loss for Lyndon State pitching a complete game. Despite giving up five earned runs in the first, was able to get in the groove holding the Terriers to just two hits over the next five innings.
GAME TWO
Thomas continued its hot bats in the second game, plating home seven runs to secure the sweep of the doubleheader 7-4.
Lyndon State got on the board first as Dylan Newton (St. Albans, Vt.) singled to left field to drive in Whitworth in the first inning. The Terriers would respond however with two runs of their own in the bottom half, as Thomas Cameron (Jackson, Maine) and Terell Boudreau (Nashua, N.H.) each drove in runs on singles to left field.
Thomas would cushion their lead with three runs in the second, with Kane picking up two RBI on a double to right center. A single by Cameron to right would plate home Kane for another run.
The Hornets would shrink their lead by picking up a run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth, but was not able to come from behind and get the victory.
Eric Sucy (Belgrade, Maine) picked up his first win of the season, going 5.2 innings, while striking out three. Cody Vigue (Skowhegan, Maine) picked up the save, tossing a hitless seventh inning.
Mason Brewer (Wiscassett, Maine) pitched five innings for the away side, striking out four in the loss. Brandon Flood (South Ryegate, Vt.) held Thomas hitless in one inning of relief.
The Terriers and Hornets will be back on the diamond tomorrow to finish off the weekend series with another doubleheader. First pitch scheduled for noon.
