Apprentice School defeats Bridgewater

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Apprentice School ended the Bridgewater baseball team's six-game winning streak with a 14-2 victory over the Eagles Thursday night.

The Builders took advantage of a costly infield error in the second inning to jump out to a quick 5-0 lead.

Devorn Lake walked and Cody Seals singled to start the inning. Mark Labrador then reached on a fielder's choice and a throwing error on the play allowed Lake to score the game's first run. Jordan Cowles singled to drive home seals and a single by Brock Harris loaded the bases. Labrador scored on a fielder's choice grounder and Cowles scored on a wild pitch for a 4-0 lead. A run-scoring single by Chris Aldridge made the score 5-0.

The Eagles got one run back in the top of the third. With two outs, Jonathan Mason walked, Andrew Hacker singled and Ryan Smith walked to load the bases. Zach Hynes then drew the bases-loaded walk to force in Bridgewater's first run. Apprentice starter Taylor Gomer escaped the jam by retiring Matt Maher on a fly ball for the third out of the inning.

The Builders then blew the game open with six runs in the bottom of the third to lead 11-1. Apprentice managed just three hits in the inning but two Eagles errors and four walks helped lead to the six runs. Zach Harding had the big hit in the inning with a two-run single to left.

Freshman pitcher Brady Cockerham took the loss on the mound for the Eagles, allowing five runs on four hits in two innings. Just one of the runs was earned. Cockerham walked two and struck out one.

The Eagles defense committed four errors in the game, leading to seven unearned runs.

Bridgewater was limited to seven hits by two Apprentice pitchers. Gomer picked up the win for the Builders as he allowed just one run on four hits in seven innings.

For the Eagles, Hacker was the only player with more than one hit as he finished 2-for-4 in the game.

Bridgewater is now 23-8 overall while the Builders improve to 27-6.
